Getting to know Scott Hooyman

Many people come to therapy feeling stuck in patterns they don’t fully understand—repeating worries, intrusive thoughts, overwhelming stress, or emotional reactions that seem hard to control. My goal as a therapist is to help you understand those patterns and develop practical tools to change them. I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 25 years of experience working with adults struggling with anxiety, OCD, trauma, depression, ADHD and life transitions. My approach is collaborative and evidence-based, using therapies such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Inference-Based CBT (I-CBT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), EMDR, Art Therapy and Internal Family Systems (IFS). In sessions, we focus on both insight and skill-building. Together we’ll identify what is maintaining the problem and work toward realistic, meaningful change. Therapy should feel like an active process where you gain clarity, confidence, and strategies you can apply in everyday life. I strive to create a supportive, non-judgmental environment where clients feel comfortable exploring difficult experiences while also moving toward concrete solutions.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and many people come in unsure of what to expect. In our first session, we’ll take time to understand what’s been happening, what you would like to change, and what goals you want therapy to help you achieve. From there, we’ll develop a clear plan for moving forward. My style is collaborative, practical, and structured. I believe therapy works best when clients not only feel understood but also leave sessions with tools they can begin using right away. Many of the people I work with are dealing with anxiety, intrusive thoughts, OCD, trauma, or feeling stuck in patterns that are difficult to break. I use evidence-based approaches including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Inference-Based CBT (I-CBT) for OCD, EMDR, and Internal Family Systems (IFS). Sessions focus on understanding the patterns behind what you’re experiencing while building strategies that help you respond differently and regain a sense of control.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session focuses on understanding your current concerns, relevant history, and what you would like to change. I’ll ask questions to get a clear picture of the patterns you’ve been experiencing and we’ll begin identifying goals for therapy. In the early phase of treatment, we work together to develop a shared understanding of what is maintaining the problem. This helps us identify specific areas to focus on and create a practical plan for moving forward. As therapy progresses, sessions often include reviewing experiences from the past week, practicing new strategies, and working through situations that have been difficult or confusing. Many clients find it helpful to apply ideas or exercises between sessions so that the work we do in therapy carries into everyday life. Throughout the process, we periodically review progress and adjust the approach as needed so that therapy remains focused on the goals that matter most to you.

Scott was a good listener and easy to speak with. He definitely knows my life story after many questions and an hour together. This was my first time contacting someone for help with my anxiety. I did not feel I got the help I needed for my insomnia and anxiety. He had some good advice about not letting the anxiety box me in and his recommendation was cognitive behavioral therapy. Long drawn out process with many appointments which I’m not a fan of. When I arrived at the office I almost walked away after seeing it. The office had a terrible, musty smell and was not one I would ever want to go back to. I would question his 5.0 rating online.

Scott is an excellent therapist! He's professional, attentive, and has been incredibly helpful in the time I've seen him. Would highly recommend!
I have been going to Alchemy Counseling off and on for almost 5 years. I appreciate that Scott has many methods beyond just talk therapy that have helped me to heal. He caters to my needs as far as treatments. It’s not one-size fits all. He has definitely helped me understand the trauma I’ve experienced and has given me the tools I need to heal without ever minimizing what I feel. I highly recommend Alchemy Counseling.
I have been working with Scott for the past 5 years. He has been there through some big phases in my life. Every visit makes me feel so much better. I’m grateful that he is my therapist.
Scott has a way of making you feel very comfortable from the first visit. He is very professional and empathetic. He is also able to help with a variety of treatment plans and objectives. Great listening skills along with immediate tools and visuals to guide you to the path of becoming the best version of yourself. I also enjoy the opportunity he provides with books & workbooks to accelerate meeting your goals & objectives while not in session. I absolutely highly recommend Scott Hooyman!
