What should a new client know about working with you?

My goal is to be a good, active, and reflective listener as we work together. Making sure I understand thoughts and feelings, and how they impact you. Responding to you in a thoughtful, compassionate manner. Challenging at times, but making sure to add some humor, because laughter truly is good medicine. I came into the helping profession, then the therapy field, some 30 years ago, because I was seeking out help for some issues I was having. Towards the end of my group, I was asked if I wanted to volunteer to help others in the next group. I said, yes. This led me to switch my major in school, earning my M.S., and becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor. Some 30 years later, I can say it never gets old, seeing people make changes in their lives, that at one point may not have seemed possible.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

After taking some time to find out your reasons for seeking therapy, we will work together to craft your goals, using the SMART Goals concept. Once your goals are set, I will discuss some treatment modality options and therapeutic concepts with you to see which may best fit you and your goals. I will check in from time to time to make sure your goals are still the same and to make sure we are working towards reaching them. Our first session will be an opportunity for us to get to know one another. We'll discuss some of what has brought you to therapy as well as other important aspects of your life. I'll also share some of my background and therapy philosophy, as well as answer any questions you may have for me, and what you can expect moving forward.
