Getting to know Sebastino Aviles

In my practice, I aim to create a space where clients can better understand themselves and their evolving identities. I believe that therapy is not one-size-fits-all, and I honor each client's unique journey and presence. Through a relationally oriented lens, I help clients examine their relationships with people, places, and challenges to gain clarity and insight into their lives. Together, we foster authenticity, self-reflection, and meaningful change. As a social worker, my approach to healing is holistic and nuanced, focusing on understanding each person within the context of their relationships, cultures, systems, and lived experiences. I emphasize the often unseen or unspoken aspects of life as crucial entry points for transformation and change. My primary therapeutic approaches include Narrative, Relational, and Interpersonal Therapy, all of which I tailor to individual needs. I also integrate techniques from Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, and Eclectic Therapy, always within a culturally sensitive and collaborative framework. My areas of specialization include LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy, trauma, anxiety and stress, depression and isolation, identity exploration, and relationship concerns. I also support clients navigating chronic medical conditions, body image and self-esteem issues, racial and cultural identity, and topics related to sexuality and sexual health. I hold dual master’s degrees in social work (MSW) and public health (MPH) from the University of Illinois at Chicago and have been practicing since 2015. Additionally, I have a Certificate in Sex Therapy from the California Institute of Integral Studies, advanced training in Narrative Therapy from the Vancouver School of Narrative Therapy, and I am EMDR trained through the EMDR International Association.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I tend to have a collaborative and conversational approach that opens up the space for honesty and connection. I’m intentional about building a therapeutic relationship rooted in authenticity, trust, and mutual respect. A therapeutic relationship where we can reflect on what’s impacting you—both internally and externally. I consider myself a relational therapist and work to understand how the relationships in your life impact you while also considering who you are through a holistic lens.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first few sessions will be dedicated to understanding your background, history, and what brings you to therapy. We will work on developing goals and outcomes that are most important to you. There will also be opportunity for you to ask me questions and learn a little about who I am and my approach to therapy.
