Getting to know Seth Thompson

I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker based in New York, with 18 years of experience in human services and a private practice focused on professionals navigating the personal side of demanding lives. I trained at Columbia and spent years working in community health before building a practice centered on the focused, one-on-one work I find most meaningful. I bring a direct and grounded perspective to every session.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is direct and conversational. I ask questions, I push back when it seems useful, and I stay engaged throughout. You won’t find me sitting quietly waiting for you to fill the silence. New clients can expect the first session to feel more like a real conversation than a formal intake. I want to understand not just what brought you in, but how you think, what you’ve already tried, and what you’re actually hoping to get out of the work.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Every client comes in with their own history, their own way of making sense of things, and their own sense of what they want to change. My job in the early sessions is to get a clear picture of all of that without making you feel like you’re starting from scratch. A lot of people put off finding a new therapist because they don’t want to spend months rehashing their whole story again. That’s not how I work. We move at your pace and focus on what’s actually relevant to where you are now. From there, the work tends to move in two directions at once. We look at the patterns that keep showing up and where they come from, and we work on practical ways of responding differently. Understanding something is useful. Being able to do something with that understanding is the point. Sessions are conducted over secure video, and most clients find that the remote format makes it easier to show up consistently without the added friction of commuting across the city. If you've never been to therapy before and aren't sure what to expect, that's a perfectly fine place to start. Reach out and we can talk about whether it feels like a good fit.
