“Shakira is the first therapist I’ve worked with beyond just a few sessions—and for good reason. Over the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of working with her, and one thing has become abundantly clear: Shakira is incredibly kind, deeply empathetic, and consistently meets me exactly where I am. She gently encourages me to be the best version of myself, challenges me to explore feelings I didn’t even realize needed attention, and helps me set clear, actionable goals to work on between sessions. Her approach ensures that I’m not just surviving—but truly thriving. While life inevitably brings its ups and downs, it’s comforting to know that my mental health has a steady foundation because I have a safe, judgment-free space to process whatever is on my mind. I’m immensely grateful to Shakira—for listening, guiding, supporting, and even just letting me wax poetic about life. I encourage anyone seeking an open-minded, compassionate ally in their healing journey to book time with her”

Getting to know Shakira Maldonado

I remember being passionate about supporting those around me-whether through laughter, simply listening, or advising friends and family. I hoped to continue this by becoming a therapist. My educational experiences, including earning a Bachelor's degree from The City College of New York and a Master's in Mental Health Counseling from the City University of New York, further fueled this desire. I learned that therapy is not always about intense moments; it is also about exploring the positive contributions within us. I find fulfillment in providing a safe environment for others by maintaining an encouraging tone. I enjoy offering space for individuals to explore how their life experiences have shaped who they are in the present moment. I particularly enjoy supporting people of all ages in coping with anxiety, personal development, depression, and strained family dynamics. I look forward to working with you!

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy is a collaborative process that you and I embark on to encourage you to become the best, most fulfilled person you can be by identifying and achieving your goals. Therapy enables us to explore different aspects of your life and how those experiences have shaped you. Some of the interventions that I utilize include; CBT, Personal Centered, Motivational Interviewing techniques, DBT techniques, Mindfulness, Gottman Method, and many more depending on your needs individually, as a couple, or as a family. Overall, my therapeutic style focuses on improving self-esteem and confidence and accomplishing your therapeutic goals. My ultimate goal is to create the space for you to reach your full potential!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach to psychotherapy is rooted in my belief that people are inherently resilient, courageous, and highly adaptive. I believe everyone has the capacity to heal and grow. The relationship between therapist and client is the foundation of effective therapy. So, with each session, I strive to create a safe and nurturing space that encourages people to explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences without feeling judged. You will be met with warm, caring attention during our time together. Unlike the cliche of the therapist as a "blank screen," you will get a sense of my personality, my values, and my dedication. My clients have described me as down-to-earth, honest, caring, and engaged. I integrate my professional experience, clinical work, education, and trainings. My life experiences, challenges, personal growth, and intuition influence how I assist and care for my clients. Working holistically, I use a variety of effective methodologies, including: relational and interpersonal therapies somatic (mind-body) therapies psychodynamic theory cognitive-behavioral therapy mindfulness techniques solution Focused therapy trauma Informed and Focused Therapy family systems theories Therapy will always be guided by your unique goals, needs, and safety. In our early sessions, we will develop a multi-layered understanding of your presenting concerns. As therapy progresses, we may examine specific stressors or traumas, behavioral patterns, interpersonal relationships, and cultural or family influences. We will aim to increase clarity and self-understanding, self-trust, and groundedness. As people begin accomplishing therapy goals, feeling energized and a sense of freedom usually arises. Therapy is not about finding a cure or "fixing" someone. Instead, I see it as a natural, unfolding process where we will explore your experiences together, enhance your strengths, and transform any limiting beliefs.
