Getting to know Shalonda Herndon

My goal as a therapist is to help you navigate life’s challenges while equipping you with practical tools to create meaningful and lasting change. I believe that healing begins in a space where you feel truly safe, supported, and understood. That’s why I strive to create an environment where you can share openly without fear of judgment—because I know how difficult it can be to open up. My approach is collaborative and client-centered. I actively involve you in the process, validate your experiences, and work with you to develop practical strategies tailored to your goals. With over 15 years of experience working with individuals, adolescents, and families across various settings—including in-home services and child welfare—I bring a deep understanding of the complexities people face in different life stages and circumstances. My areas of focus include trauma and childhood trauma, anxiety, depression (including postpartum), parent-child relationships, couples therapy, self-esteem, and more. I utilize a range of evidence-based modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Person-Centered Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution-Focused Therapy. Because every individual is unique, I tailor my interventions to meet your specific needs and circumstances. I hold a Master’s Degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Walden University and a Master’s Degree in Human Services Administration from Bellevue University. My clinical experience includes trauma-informed care, working with individuals facing co-occurring disorders (such as substance use and psychotic disorders), extensive work with adolescents, providing psychosexual evaluations and counseling for adolescents, and supporting individuals with eating disorders. Above all, I believe that everyone has the capacity for growth and healing.

What should a new client know about working with you?

As a therapist, my approach is a nonjudgmental presence, and the sense of safety they feel in our work together. My approach is collaborative, compassionate, and practical—I meet you where you are and work alongside you to explore what’s getting in the way of the life you want to live. You can expect a space where your voice matters. I will listen deeply, validate your experiences, and gently challenge you when needed to support your growth. Together, we’ll identify meaningful goals and use evidence-based strategies tailored to your needs, whether that means navigating anxiety, healing from trauma, or strengthening your relationships. Therapy with me is not one-size-fits-all. I draw from CBT, DBT, person-centered therapy, solution-focused approaches, and motivational interviewing—always customizing interventions to fit your unique story and goals. Most importantly, I believe in your capacity for healing and change. You don’t have to go through this alone. I’m here to help you feel supported, empowered, and equipped for whatever comes next.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Whether you're navigating trauma, anxiety, relationship challenges, or life transitions, my goal is to walk alongside you with compassion, clarity, and care. Do you struggle with anxiety, depression, or challenges in your relationships that affect your ability to function day-to-day, maintain healthy connections, or feel at ease in your own skin? Do you feel overwhelmed and exhausted by trying to meet expectations, manage stress, or simply make it through the day? Do you wonder if life could feel lighter, more manageable, and fulfilling? Now more than ever, people are feeling anxious, uncertain, and stuck when it comes to navigating life's transitions, coping with mental health challenges, or finding a sense of purpose. Not addressing your anxiety or depression can lead to further emotional struggles, strained relationships, and missed opportunities for growth. We believe it shouldn't be this hard to feel better-there is hope, and healing is possible. At Gateway To You Mental Health Counseling Center PLLC, we offer individual therapy for those facing anxiety and depression. We help you by developing personalized strategies to manage your emotions, providing evidence-based tools like CBT and mindfulness, and creating a supportive space where you feel safe and heard. We offer inclusive, client-centered care, expertise in treating anxiety and depression, and a holistic approach so you can take the first step toward healing and start building the life you want. Helping you overcome life's challenges and rediscover your joy is our mission. We guide you to feel more in control, regain a sense of self-worth, and build resilience in the face of adversity. Book your appointment today, and let's take that first step together.

Shalonda is great! I look forward to my sessions with her every week. My anxiety and stress levels have decreased tremendously since we’ve started working together. I feel like I can finally start enjoying life again without constantly worrying. She’s supportive, easy to talk to, and truly understands how to help. I highly recommend her to anyone seeking a compassionate and effective therapist.
From the very first session with Shalonda, she created a space where I felt safe and free to be myself. She listens and takes the time to fully understand what I'm saying. I feel very calm during our sessions. After just a few sessions, I feel hopeful and ready to work towards my goals. I’m truly grateful for the work we’ve done together so far.
