You may understand where your patterns come from and still feel stuck repeating them. Maybe you grew up in a family where you learned to keep the peace, take care of everyone else, avoid conflict, or ignore your own needs. Now, those patterns may show up as anxiety, people-pleasing, difficulty setting boundaries, complicated family relationships, overthinking, guilt, or feeling responsible for other people's emotions. I work with adults and young adults who want to understand and break patterns connected to intergenerational trauma, childhood experiences, family dynamics, relationships, and major life transitions. My work often focuses on helping clients recognize what they learned to do to survive or belong within their family system—and decide what they want to carry forward and what they are ready to change. I also work with individuals struggling with substance use, compulsive sexual behavior, problematic sexual behaviors, and cycles involving urges, shame, secrecy, or repeated behaviors that no longer align with the life they want. Therapy with me is practical, reflective, and collaborative. We will look at both the "why" behind a pattern and what you can actually do differently now. Our work may include identifying triggers, strengthening boundaries, challenging unhelpful beliefs, developing healthier coping strategies, improving relationships, and learning how to respond differently when old patterns resurface. The goal isn't to blame your past or your family. It's to understand what shaped you well enough that it no longer has to automatically determine what comes next.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is conversational, direct, curious, and compassionate. I'm not a therapist who will simply sit back and ask, "How does that make you feel?" for an entire session. I will listen, but I will also ask questions, point out patterns, help you make connections, challenge you when it is useful, and give you practical strategies to use outside of therapy. We may explore why setting a boundary creates so much guilt, why you automatically become the caretaker in relationships, why certain family interactions trigger intense anxiety, or why you keep returning to a behavior even when you know it is creating problems. For clients struggling with substance use or compulsive sexual behavior, I approach these concerns without shame or moral judgment. We work to understand what the behavior is doing for you, identify triggers and patterns, reduce harmful behaviors, build alternative coping strategies, and address the underlying emotional or relational issues that may be maintaining the cycle.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first few sessions focus on understanding what is happening now, what brought you to therapy, and the experiences and patterns that may have contributed to where you are today. We will talk about your current symptoms and concerns, important relationships and family dynamics, previous experiences with therapy, coping strategies, and what you would like to be different in your life. From there, we identify the patterns that seem to keep showing up. That might be anxiety and overthinking during a major life transition, difficulty saying no without guilt, people-pleasing, conflict with family, repeating unhealthy relationship dynamics, or turning to substances or sexual behaviors when feeling stressed, disconnected, overwhelmed, or emotionally uncomfortable. Sessions are individualized rather than following the exact same formula each week. Depending on what you need, we may explore family-of-origin patterns, identify triggers, examine beliefs you learned earlier in life, practice boundary-setting and communication, develop coping strategies, or work through a current situation together. I also believe therapy should translate into your life outside the session. As our work progresses, we will regularly look at what is changing, what still feels difficult, and whether our approach needs to shift. Ultimately, the goal is to help you understand your patterns, recognize when they are happening in real time, and develop enough flexibility and confidence to choose a different response.
