Getting to know Shannon Hendrick

Shannon Hendrick is a Mental Health Counselor with experience across community mental health, substance use, and private practice settings. Before becoming a therapist, she spent several years in NYC marketing, which informs how she works with clients navigating burnout, career transitions, and the particular exhaustion of a life that looks fine from the outside. She works with children, adolescents, and adults navigating anxiety, depression, ADHD and neurodivergence, trauma, and life transitions. Many of Shannon's clients have spent years keeping it together on the outside while quietly struggling underneath with anxiety, perfectionism, people-pleasing, or self-doubt. They may appear fine while internally feeling overwhelmed or emotionally exhausted. She is especially drawn to working with people who have felt like they were too much, never quite enough, or like they had to change parts of themselves just to feel accepted. With younger clients, she takes a warm and flexible approach, meeting children where they are and tailoring the work to how they best express themselves. Her approach is relational, attachment-informed, and trauma-informed, drawing on CBT, DBT, ACT, and psychodynamic thinking. She approaches therapy with curiosity and acceptance, believing there is usually a reason behind the ways people think, feel, and cope, and that feeling genuinely understood is not just a byproduct of therapy but part of how healing happens. She wants clients to feel they can show up honestly, make mistakes, and not have to pretend they are doing better than they are. She brings warmth and humor into sessions and is genuinely on her clients' side. She is LGBTQ+ affirming and welcomes clients of all backgrounds and identities. Shannon earned her Master of Science in Education in Mental Health Counseling fom Hunter College and her Bachelor of Science in Family Science with a Child Life Specialist concentration and a minor in Business from Miami University.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My style is warm, collaborative, and actively engaged. I believe therapy is a partnership, so I don't sit silently waiting for clients to figure everything out alone. Instead, I ask questions and point out patterns, while ensuring clients have space to discuss whatever is on their mind. It is vital that my clients feel accurately understood, heard, safe, and accepted. To maintain this environment, I check in regularly about how our sessions feel, adapting based on their feedback. If a skill isn't clicking, I want them to feel comfortable telling me. This is their time and space; I will never be offended or upset. I bring humor into sessions when it fits naturally. Conversation should feel genuine and real, not clinical like a doctor's office. Clients are equal partners, not subjects being evaluated. Therapy does not have to feel heavy and serious every minute to be meaningful. Building solid rapport and strong relationships takes time and patience. I cannot expect clients to open up honestly without mutual respect and deep understanding. Feeling fully accepted by another human being is a core mechanism of how people heal, not just a pleasant side effect of the work. Many people enter therapy feeling pressure to provide the "right" answers, make constant progress, or appear more put-together than they feel. I work to create a space free from the pressure to perform or pretend. I am deeply curious about the "why" behind things. This curiosity isn't about getting stuck in the past; rather, I believe that understanding where a pattern originated makes it significantly easier to transform it in the present. While my approach is psychodynamic and insight-oriented, I value practical coping skills. I want clients to have tools they can use between sessions to manage high-intensity emotions. To reduce feelings of shame and guilt, I help clients view their behaviors not as inherent flaws, but as strategies that were once adaptive and developed to help them survive.
