Shariff Gibbons

Shariff Gibbons

Psychotherapist
NY
I have been a social worker for over 10 years and a practicing therapist for the past 5 years. I earned my Master’s in Social Work from Stony Brook University and have had the opportunity to work with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds and life experiences. I specialize in supporting clients navigating anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, relationship challenges, life transitions, and identity exploration. I also have experience working with members of the LGBTQ+ community, including individuals exploring questions related to gender, sexuality, identity, and relationships. I understand that reaching out for therapy can feel vulnerable, and I strive to create a space where you can feel comfortable being yourself. My approach is compassionate, honest, and nonjudgmental. Therapy can be challenging, but you do not have to navigate that process alone.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When working with me, you can expect a welcoming and supportive environment where you are encouraged to show up exactly as you are. I value transparency and honesty in the therapeutic relationship and believe that meaningful change begins when you feel safe enough to talk openly about what you are experiencing. Whether you are struggling with anxiety or depression, processing traumatic experiences, navigating difficulties in your relationships, or exploring your gender or sexuality, we will work together to better understand what is happening beneath the surface. My goal is not to judge or tell you who you should be, but to help you gain greater insight into yourself, recognize your strengths, and develop healthier ways of navigating life's challenges.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I begin by taking the time to understand you as a whole person—not simply the symptoms or challenges that brought you to therapy. Together, we will explore your experiences, relationships, concerns, strengths, and the changes you would like to see in your life. From there, we will develop goals that feel meaningful and realistic for you. Our sessions may involve processing past experiences, identifying patterns that are affecting you today, exploring thoughts and emotions, strengthening coping skills, and developing new ways of approaching relationships and difficult situations. Therapy is a collaborative process, and I will meet you with compassion, honesty, and support throughout that process. The work of therapy isn't always easy, but when working with me, you won't have to do that work alone.
