Getting to know Shauntel Lucius

Maybe you’re tired of feeling like you’re having the same conversation with yourself over and over again. You know something needs to change, but knowing that and actually changing it are two very different things. Maybe anxiety has taken over, a relationship is struggling, you’re trying to recover from something painful, or you’re carrying trauma that still shows up in your life today. Maybe substance use has become something you can no longer ignore, or you’re working hard to stay in recovery and want support that goes deeper than simply getting through the day. I believe people are capable of making real, lasting changes, even when they’ve been stuck in the same patterns for a long time. My job is to help you understand what’s happening, be honest about what needs to change, and give you the support to actually do something about it. I’m warm and compassionate, but I’m also direct. I’ll listen without judgment, but I won’t avoid the hard conversations when they matter. Sometimes growth means looking at the choices you’re making, the relationships you’re staying in, the boundaries you’re not setting, or the ways you may be coping that are no longer helping you. That doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. It means there’s an opportunity to do things differently. I have specialized certification in substance use and recovery, and I’m passionate about helping people create lives they genuinely want to live, whether that means building a stronger recovery, healing from trauma, improving a relationship, working through grief, or learning to respond to life in healthier ways. Therapy isn’t about becoming a completely different person. It’s about understanding yourself, breaking patterns that aren’t working anymore, and becoming more intentional about the life you’re building. If you’re ready to be honest with yourself and willing to do the work, I’ll meet you there. I provide telehealth therapy throughout New Jersey.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You can expect me to listen to you, but you can also expect me to be honest with you. Therapy with me isn’t about talking through the same problems over and over without making changes. We’ll work together to understand what’s happening and figure out what you can do differently. Maybe you know a thought isn’t helpful, but you still believe it every time it shows up. Maybe you react to situations in ways you later regret, feel overwhelmed by your emotions, or keep repeating the same patterns in your relationships. We’ll slow those moments down and look at what’s really happening, then work on practical ways to respond differently. If part of you wants to change while another part isn’t ready, we’ll talk about that too. You never have to pretend with me. I’ll meet you where you are, but I’ll also encourage you to be accountable to where you want to go. My goal is for you to leave therapy with more than insight. I want you to have the skills, confidence, and clarity to make changes that actually last.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session is about getting a clear picture of what’s bringing you to therapy and what you want to change. We’ll talk about your current concerns, relevant history, relationships, and goals, then identify where it makes the most sense to begin. You don’t need to have everything figured out. That’s part of what we’ll work through together. Ongoing sessions are structured around what you need, with a balance of honest conversation, self-reflection, and practical work. We may explore anxiety and stress, relationship patterns, boundaries, emotional regulation, self-esteem, substance use and recovery, or a major life transition. I’ll help you notice patterns, understand what is underneath them, and identify choices that move you toward the life you want. I’m supportive, but I also believe in doing the work. You can expect me to listen without judgment, ask honest questions, and gently challenge you when it may help you move forward. Sessions may include practical coping strategies, boundary-setting, relapse prevention, or tools you can use between appointments. As we go, we’ll regularly check in on your progress and adjust our focus as your needs change. My goal is for you to leave therapy with greater self-awareness, stronger trust in yourself, and practical skills you can carry into everyday life.
