Getting to know Shawn Edgington

I am a licensed professional counselor with over 25 years of experience working with children, teens, adults, and families. I’ve supported kids with big feelings, overwhelmed parents, and adults carrying long-term stress, trauma, and anxiety, giving me a practical understanding of how family dynamics, life transitions, and nervous system overload affect everyday life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I’m a warm, down-to-earth, and straightforward therapist. You don’t have to have the “right words” or a perfectly organized story when you come in—that’s part of the work we’ll do together. My job is to help you feel safe enough to be honest, then make sense of what you’re carrying so it feels more manageable. I use evidence-based approaches like cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), trauma-informed care, and attachment-focused work, but I explain things in plain language and always connect it back to your real life. We’ll look at how your thoughts, emotions, body, and behavior fit together, then build practical tools you can use between sessions—whether that’s for anxiety, stress, relationship issues, or big life transitions (including hormonal changes, perimenopause, and menopause). I’ve worked with children, teens, adults, and families for over 25 years, so I understand how family dynamics and life stress can pile up. In our work, you can expect a mix of empathy, gentle challenge when it’s helpful, and a collaborative approach—checking in regularly about what’s working, what isn’t, and adjusting the plan so therapy feels useful, respectful, and sustainable for you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first session, my main goal is to get to know you and what brought you in—your current concerns, your history, and what you’d like to be different. I’ll ask some guiding questions, but I move at your pace. We’ll talk about what’s been hardest lately (anxiety, stress, mood, relationships, parenting, hormonal changes, etc.) and start to outline a few realistic goals together. After that, sessions usually follow a steady rhythm: a brief check-in about how you’ve been, what has shown up since we last met, and then focused work on a theme or pattern—like anxious thoughts, people-pleasing, communication, or coping with overwhelm. I draw from CBT, trauma-informed, and attachment-focused approaches, but I explain things in plain language and always connect it back to your real life. You can expect a mix of talking through what’s going on, learning specific tools (for calming your body, challenging unhelpful thoughts, or setting boundaries), and deciding together what to practice between sessions. I check in regularly about what is or isn’t working so we can adjust the pace and focus. My aim is for therapy to feel safe, respectful, and genuinely useful—not like one more thing on your to-do list.

More information on payments and coverage

I partner with Headway, a secure third-party platform, to handle all of my insurance billing and payments. When you schedule, you’ll be invited to create a Headway account where you can: Enter your insurance information Add a debit/credit card on file See your estimated copay/coinsurance and benefits Headway verifies your coverage before we meet whenever possible and then bills your insurance directly after each session. Any copay, coinsurance, or deductible amount you owe is automatically charged to the card you have on file, so you don’t have to manage claims or send payments separately. If I am not in-network with your plan or you prefer not to use insurance, we can discuss private pay options. Headway can provide receipts for your records, and you’re always welcome to ask questions about costs, coverage, or billing—I want money and insurance to be as straightforward and stress-free as possible.
