Getting to know Shawn Masters

Hello, I'm Shawn, and I'm here to help you achieve your goals in the shortest possible time while building a foundation for lasting improvements. In our first meeting, we'll discuss what brings you to counseling, what you want to accomplish, and the barriers you've encountered in your previous attempts. I understand that this initial meeting is crucial for you to decide if I can help you, so I make a point to be present, share my initial thoughts, and pose questions to help build your confidence. With 20 years of experience, I've helped countless individuals with issues such as sadness and depression, stress and anxiety, relationships, life changes, loss, trauma, self-esteem, parenting, and more. I believe that no single approach is ideal for everyone, so I incorporate multiple counseling approaches, interventions, and tools to tailor the therapy to your needs. Some of the therapeutic approaches I use include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Brief Psychodynamic Therapy. CBT focuses on recognizing negative thought patterns and changing thoughts, behaviors, and feelings through concrete skills. This approach is typically more short-term, lasting eight to 12 weekly sessions, and involves homework assignments like journaling negative thoughts, writing self-statements, practicing positive reinforcement, mastering meditation practices, learning visualization techniques, and doing breathing exercises. Brief Psychodynamic Therapy, on the other hand, is designed to help you discover what is blocking you from progressing in a certain area. This approach focuses on gaining insight into how your early life experiences affect your present day, helping you develop a greater understanding of yourself and make lasting changes. I earned my Master's Degree in Counseling from the University of San Francisco in 1999 and completed coursework for a Doctoral degree in Counselor Education at the University of Cincinnati.
