Getting to know Shawn Schaeffer

My wife and I have been married for 27 years, and both of us are veterans. We have three children and six grandchildren. I grew up in an extremely abusive household and joined the military to escape that life. After my career in the military, I was afforded the opportunity to go to college and obtained a degree that would allow me to help others through challenging life experiences, or the negative effects of those experiences that can last a lifetime if not addressed.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am not what you would call a "normal therapist". Living through childhood abuse/trauma, along with combat trauma as an adult, my experiences give me an understanding and empathy that books cannot teach. We will work together, to achieve your goals. Whether that is healing, growing, or just surviving.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session is used to gain an understanding of your experiences. From there, we will make a treatment plan with goals that fit your needs. Goals are usually simple, such as reducing symptoms that you are experiencing.
