Getting to know Shea Barakatt

Shea is a highly motivated and energetic therapist who has worked in the mental health and substance abuse field for over 20 years as both a Clinical Director and a therapist. She earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Clinical Social Work from the University of Oklahoma, where she was also an athlete. Shea works with adults, specializing in personal health and growth by addressing the mind, body, and spirit, including family dynamics. Her approach incorporates multiple modalities, including EMDR, certification in Narrative Exposure Therapy for trauma, CBT, and DBT, with an emphasis on Gestalt therapy. She enjoys creating family or individual intensive sessions to address the here and now. She loves to exercise, travel, and spend time with her family. Shea is married and has one son who is in college, and her dog Blair is a rescue full of love. Her life experiences, challenges, and education have given her empathy and direct honesty to help others dig deep and find solutions. “I believe we are all connected on a spiritual level, and if change is to occur, it must come from within and take action to do something different. This is uncomfortable, but this is courage.”

What should a new client know about working with you?

I received my Master's in 1999 and I am seasoned in working with individuals and families. I am a mother, a wife, and I have had many trials in life, thus creating a non-judgmental thought process and solution-focused answers. I am very straightforward with the truth. I am an action-oriented therapist and use an Eclectic approach. I think outside the box because humans are individuals, and each person deserves individual care. The modalities that I use most frequently are Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and EMDR. I believe that movement and nutrition are vital in maintaining the body. Mental health is just as vital as physical health, and both are one in the same.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Every individual and diagnosis is different. I start with a consult call, usually about 15 minutes long. Then you come in for an intake assessment during a roughly 1.5hr session. Depending on acuity, sessions are weekly or bi-weekly, usually for aprox. 12 weeks. Most clients stay with me for maintenance sessions monthly. They find value in staying balanced in life and having a place to be able to decompress when things gets hard.
