Getting to know Shelly Zhou

*This provider does not accept any Medicaid or Medicare plans* Whether you're dealing with a big change in your life or have been feeling weighed down for a long time, I'm here to help you through it. Using a trauma-informed and strengths-based approach, I empower my clients to develop the confidence and skills needed to overcome life's challenges. Through empathetic listening and evidence-based practices, I help clients reconnect with their authentic selves and lead fulfilling lives that are in alignment with their values. I specialize in working with adolescents and young adults who struggle with issues related to anxiety, depression, self-esteem, adjustment difficulties, and relationship challenges. I also love working with individuals who are interested in identity exploration and self-discovery. Entering therapy can feel intimidating. It's not easy to open up and share vulnerable parts of ourselves, but I believe any potential discomfort can be well worth the ultimate reward. I hold a gentle and compassionate space to meet you where you are, and my hope is that together, we can move forward towards a path that feels supportive and impactful. I earned my Master's in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Pennsylvania, which has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to provide thoughtful, effective care. As endorsed by Shania Forbes on Psychology Today: "Shelly creates a warm and welcoming space where clients feel truly heard and understood. She has a special way of helping adolescents and young adults feel seen, valued, and confident in who they are. Through her thoughtful guidance, she helps clients explore their strengths and values, empowering them to embrace their worth." Shelly Zhou has a Master’s in Counseling from the University of Pennsylvania. Shelly is a Licensed Associate Professional Counselor, LAPC at Cerebral. Supervised by Eric Lavalle, Professional Counselor, LMHC10003474 (MA), PC011223 (PA).

What should a new client know about working with you?

I'm happy to work with anyone who is willing to take this brave step towards nourishing their mental health! As a young, Asian-American woman, I have a special affinity towards working with this population and at the same time am excited by working with people of different backgrounds and cultures. I am very experienced in working with children and adolescents and love to help adolescents thrive through difficult transition periods of development.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I am a firm believer in the power of community and support. I believe no one deserves to struggle alone. I take a gentle and compassionate approach to meet you exactly where you are. I take a person-centered approach to my work, which means that I acknowledge that you are the expert of your own life. I’m not here to judge or tell you what to do. Instead, I’m here to listen and support you. Together, I hope to work with you to discover your authentic self, so that you can live a life in alignment with your true values.
