Getting to know Shirley Derosa
I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with a diverse range of experiences in the mental health field. I have worked in a number of settings to include community-based services, and private practice. I have worked with individuals from pre-adolescent, adolescents, adults, and couples, and a wide range of mental health conditions ranging from anxiety, depression, life transitions, and relationship conflicts, to more severe mental health disorders.
I received my BA in Psychology with a minor in Sociology from Florida Atlantic University, and my MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, with a focus on trauma. I continue my professional development through trainings and certifications in trauma and couples. I am National Certified Counselor through the Board of National Certified Counselors, and I am licensed by the Virginia board of counseling. I am affiliated with the American Counseling Association and the Virginia Counseling Association.
Grounded on the belief that everyone has the potential to heal and grow, I use an integrated approach to help individuals reach their goals. I work collaboratively with my clients in creating personalized interventions supported by evidenced based treatments.
What should a new client know about working with you?
I believe that the client is the expert of their own lives and my role as a therapist is to help the client navigate through the difficult times by providing tools and support to manage the symptoms of anxiety, depression, and life transitions, in order to achieve overall wellness. I like to work directly with the client and together determine the best evidence based treatment approach for their care.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
What to expect in your first session: I would call our first session the "getting to know you" session. I conduct a thorough Bio-Psycho-Social assessment consisting of childhood, family history, and personal history, in addition to presenting concerns, while answering any questions or concerns that may arise. This is why I hold first sessions in-person, I believe that it is important in the establishment of the therapeutic relationship. I do also offer Telehealth sessions as needed.
