Her style of therapy is from the Narrative theory, aiming to separate the individual from the problem, allowing the individual to externalize their issues rather than internalize them. She believes it is essential for clients to understand they are a part of the solution and not the problem. Shirley’s narrative style counseling allows her to help the client gain and maintain resilience in overcoming trauma and negative emotions. She achieves this using the four principles of Narrative theory; understanding reality is socially constructed, understanding that reality is influenced by and communicated through language, understanding how having a narrative can help us organize and maintain our reality, and there is no objective reality or absolute truth. These principles assist Shirley in empowering her clients to understand how they are telling their story, separate themselves from the problem, break the problem down to be manageable, see their life challenges in a more positive perspective, and make new meaning of their lives in the world. She employs various therapeutic modalities such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution-Focused therapy, and Jungian.
