“I've been going to Solange for 5 years and its been great for me. She's helped me see different perspectives to life situations, which has helped me better assess things. I think what has made her so effective is she's very matter of fact. She doesnt sugar coat things or try to coddle you, and that is exactly what I needed.”

Getting to know Solange Zelman

My interest in psychology has taken me from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to the pioneering and internationally known Esalen Institute, in Big Sur, CA, where I lived in the community for more than two years. There I studied process Gestalt groups as the medium for awareness, and eventually went on to get my Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University in Los Angeles. I completed my clinical psychology internship at the Center for Individual and Family Counseling working with adults, couples and families. I have training in the following modalities: psychodynamic, attachment theory, gestalt, cognitive-behavioral (CBT), family-systems, solution-focused therapy, and mindfulness. I am interested in, (IFS), and neuroscience. I see individual adults, couples, and families. I treat all anxiety, mood, and adjustment disorders. I co-facilitate groups of immigrants challenged in their interpersonal relationships, in the work force, in their families, and assimilating to the US culture as a whole. Prior to becoming a therapist, I spent 27 years working as an entrepreneur and business owner in the fashion industry in Brazil, Asia, New York City and Los Angeles. I feel this gives me a unique perspective and a deep understanding on the experiences of entrepreneurs. I also realize one always has the opportunity to make meaningful choices for oneself and shift from dissatisfaction to fulfillment. As an immigrant myself I understand the determination, perseverance and strength needed to overcome internal and external challenges such as; the experience of isolation, frustration & fear, the language barriers & the identity issues associated with not being able to express oneself effectively, the far reaching effects of family separation, missing the home country & the way of life, & negotiating 2 cultures. I bring over 50 years of earned wisdom, a strong passion to the therapeutic process, and my commitment to helping you. I can conduct therapy in Portuguese.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy is about exploring, experimenting, discovering, and being vulnerable. My style of work is intuitive, sincere, direct & interactive. In our therapy together you will learn to increase curiosity, self-compassion, mindfulness skills, and your ability to sit with uncertainty, and bear witness to your thought patterns, uncomfortable feelings and body sensations. You will gain awareness of the role negative core beliefs and thoughts have upon mood, and learn how to challenge those negative thought patterns. You will learn to set appropriate boundaries by asserting feelings, recognizing wants and needs, and identifying the role shame and guilt might play in causing unhealthy behaviors; Behaviors that have become old, stale, harmful, inauthentic, and hinder your growth and development today. Behaviors that are perpetuating what you want to avoid the most in your life and in your relationships. My intention is to help you uncover your authentic self underneath the struggles overwhelming you, and work toward developing a more integrated and positive sense of self, as well as to help you experience and maintain healthier and more fulfilling relationships. In seeking therapy, I understand you are looking for help, support and somebody to trust. I don’t have all the answers, but I am interested in you. I have a lot of curiosity to discover who you are and how I can facilitate your journey of change and growth. In that process, I will offer kindness with clarity and compassion. I specialize in treating individuals who struggle with anxiety, depression, bereavement, grief and loss, parenting challenges, adults raised by narcissistic or borderline parents, couples and families facing communication breakdowns and negative relational patterns. Life transitions, cultural isolation, chronic pain, and non chemical addictions.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In my experience of working with clients, re-parenting skills will introduce new ways of feeling, thinking, interacting and being. This process allows you, the client, to rediscover your power and gain self-reliance. This process can be challenging – however, together we will find your strengths, even if you may not see them. I am here to help you find your true and authentic self. My style of work comes from a combination of psycho dynamic, family systems and attachment theory, based on the idea that our present condition has an intrinsic connection to our family history. I also find Gestalt theory for the “Here and Now” and “I and Thou” experiences in session, which mirror what happens outside of the therapy room to be beneficial in this process. I utilize Mindfulness, breathing exercises and Dialectical Behavior Therapy techniques for distress tolerance, emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness skills. I have extensive knowledge and experience working with individuals struggling with: Anxiety, panic, and OCD Abandonment Anger management Boundary issues Cultural isolation Existential stress: isolation, emptiness, life transitions Eating Disorders Grief and loss Infidelities and trust Intimacy LGBT issues Mood disorders Physical, emotional, and/or sexual abuse Unhealthy relationship dynamics: including dysfunctional communication styles Self-esteem; shame, grandiosity, lack of confidence, identity issues

Solange is an amazing therapist. She’s professional, gives input, and is a very wise woman. She has helped me manage my childhood trauma and triggers immensely. Has taught me ways to shift old behaviors into new ones. Has helped me to let go of control, which is a big one for me. Made me aware of certain behaviors I have in my relationship with partner, and work on awareness and changing them. Overall, she’s changed my life in the most positive way.
