Sonia Palmer, LMFT

Psychotherapist
4445 Eastgate Mall, Ste 2041, San Diego, CA
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist specializing in trauma, anxiety, OCD, health anxiety, and attachment-related concerns. My work is grounded in EMDR, CBT, DBT, and attachment-based therapy, and I take a trauma-informed, nervous-system focused approach to care. I work with adults who are thoughtful and high-functioning, yet feel stuck in patterns of overthinking, emotional reactivity, people-pleasing, or difficulty setting boundaries. Therapy with me is collaborative, compassionate, and practical, with a focus on helping clients understand how past experiences shape present patterns while also building the skills needed for meaningful change.

Getting to know Sonia Palmer

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is warm, relational, and supportive, while also being structured and goal-oriented. I believe insight is important, but lasting change comes from learning to regulate emotions, shift patterns, and practice new ways of responding. I aim to create a space where clients feel safe, understood, and not judged, while also gently challenged to grow. I work through an attachment and trauma-informed lens and tailor treatment to each person’s nervous system, history, and goals. Clients often describe feeling both emotionally supported and guided in a clear, grounded way.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first sessions focus on understanding your history, current concerns, and goals, as well as assessing emotional regulation, relationship patterns, and nervous system responses. Together, we develop a treatment plan that may include EMDR, cognitive-behavioral strategies, emotion regulation skills, and attachment-based work. Sessions typically involve a combination of processing, skill-building, and practical tools you can use between sessions. Therapy is collaborative and paced according to your readiness, with regular check-ins to ensure the approach feels supportive, effective, and aligned with your goals.
