Getting to know Spencer Dimmick

Hi there! I am a mental health counselor with a master's degree from Adler University. I completed my bachelor's degree in English and Classics at Tufts University. As a queer-identified person, I am a strong advocate for the LGBTQIA+ community. I take steps to ensure that I work with cultural competence and cultural humility, with all of my clients and the identities they bring into the room. My clinical interests center around the power of stories to impact a person's life and the world around them, both the stories we tell ourselves and the stories others tell us. I primarily have experience working with clients who have complex trauma, anxiety disorders, ADHD, and OCD. I primarily use Narrative Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) when working with clients. Reaching out to a therapist is one of the most vulnerable things you can do. One of the easiest things I can do to honor the vulnerability you've already shown is to treat you with empathy, compassion, and understanding that you are the expert in your own life - not me. Your goals for therapy set the course and we travel it together, with unconditional acceptance and nonjudgmental attitude.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach centers you, the client, as the expert of your own life. It is neither my place nor my intention to tell you how to live your life, nor whether what you're doing is right or wrong. I help you explore the context that you may be making your decisions in, figure out your goals, and help you to identify the values you want present in your life. Much of this work is done with storytelling - together, we walk through the stories you tell yourself and that others tell you, and figure out which ones may be helping, and which ones may need revising. By the end of this process, you should be able to better understand your own values and goals, and tell a story about yourself that centers your strengths and allows you to face your life with resolve.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Typical sessions with me will involve checking in at the start, seeing how things feel in your life in the present moment, and then diving into anything that might come up. My sessions are primarily client-led, whether making space for processing recent experiences or exploring past traumas or stories. If you don't have anything to talk about, that's fine too - I will take a look at our goals for counseling together, and direct the conversation until you feel ready to guide it yourself. The process aims to keep you engaged in counseling, not feeling like you're just being talked at the entire time.
