“She was very easy to talk to. As this was one of my first experiences with a therapist I was afraid of being overwhelmed and the process being invasive but it was a very good first session. I felt she listened well to my needs and provided attainable goals and results for the start of my therapy.”

Getting to know Srividhya Subramanian

You made it here! No matter what happened today, you decided not to be reduced by it. You took the FIRST step on your path to wellness. I wholeheartedly welcome you with open arms and an open mind to a completely non-judgmental space. I strive to create the safety you yearn for in this moment to express your thoughts and feelings. As Brené Brown says, if we share our story with someone who responds with empathy and understanding, shame can't survive. I look forward to being that empathic and compassionate person with whom you can share your story. I am truly honored and humbled to be part of your healing journey. You are a person with many strengths and unique resilience, and I believe recognizing them builds self-awareness. This will be the foundation of coping skills to help slay your life's stressors! Together, we will learn trauma-sensitive mindfulness techniques inside and outside therapy. You will learn to stay present in a way that does not force you to close your eyes for the first time in a strange place. Using cognitive behavioral, dialectical behavioral, and cognitive processing therapy techniques, I will help you identify and challenge belief patterns shaped by past unpleasant experiences—patterns that felt safe then but no longer serve you NOW! I have worked with adults and older adults who experienced trauma in childhood or adulthood. I've learned mental health issues like anxiety and depression often stem from fear, guilt, and shame rooted in past trauma. Through my work, I've seen that my trauma-informed and person-centered approach helps clients feel more heard and seen throughout therapy. Oh yes! I very much care about YOU! I hold a Master’s in Social Work from Boston University, a Master’s in Computer Science from the University of Arizona, and a Bachelor’s from Anna University, Chennai. These diverse educational experiences enrich my approach and deepen my commitment to supporting you on your journey.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My focus in therapy is on the client and meeting the client “where they are at”. This points to the fact that my approach and tools that I use in session change depending on the needs of the client. I work with each client to ensure their needs are being met and I am using the appropriate tools and techniques to help them achieve their goals. These goals are developed by each client and will be continually assessed and modified as the needs of the client change. I employ a person-centered approach that helps build on the client’s strengths. I use therapeutic techniques in counseling such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), cognitive processing therapy (CPT), motivational interviewing, psychodynamic approach, mindfulness, narrative therapy, improved self-talk and self-care methods, and communication skills. I do strive to ensure I take up a culturally sensitive approach with clients to understand and appreciate the client’s culture in therapy. Moreover, I do want to make sure the client understands that I do not judge the client’s experiences shared in session and make every effort possible to ensure that the client is comfortable and able to share freely, knowing this is a safe space to share. I primarily work with individuals who are adults. Before starting my private practice, I had worked with survivors of domestic violence, during my advanced internship in my Master of Social Work (MSW) at Boston University. In addition, I had the privilege of working with older adults who experienced severe and persistent mental illnesses, many of whom felt at ease to share their traumatic pasts with me. It would be my honor to work with clients on issues of mental health such as anxiety, depression, low self-worth, self-compassion and self-love. Personally, I identify as an immigrant and a person of color, more specifically born in India. Prefer she/her/hers. Can fluently speak Tamizh and English. For leisure, I enjoy going on long nature walks. I love yoga for self-care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

What to expect in therapy? - Mindfulness techniques like grounding through a multi-sensory approach and belly-based breathing or diaphragmatic breathing. - Mindful self-compassion meditations by Kristen Neff - Cognitive Behavioral (CBT) techniques to uncover and dissect negative thought patterns and core beliefs - Person centered and trauma-informed approach – what happened to you rather than the whys - Uncovering your narrative and identifying thought and behavior patterns that are not serving you effectively anymore through Cognitive Processing therapy (CPT) techniques - Emotion focused therapy with effective emotional regulation and distress tolerance skills of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) to help build effective support systems that work for your unique situation - Help bring out pleasurable activities that fit your lifestyle - All within the stages of trauma framework by Judith Herman
