Stephanie Banning, LMFT

Psychotherapist
CA
My name is Stephanie Banning, and I am a licensed LMFT. I earned my Master's in Clinical Psychology from Azusa Pacific University. I have spent 15+ years working with individuals struggling with addiction and recovery, including substance abuse and eating disorders. Due to my specialties, I have developed expertise in mood disorders and OCD. I believe in meeting individuals where they are and that trauma looks different to everyone because you cannot see someone's mental health. My approach I work within a psychodynamic and narrative framework; I also find value in attachment therapy and believe object relations can be useful to some. Incorporating artistic expression into sessions can be helpful, as some individuals express more when therapy includes a tangible, kinesthetic experience. My focus I have worked with individuals who have experienced trauma resulting in maladaptive coping mechanisms, such as addiction or codependency. Those struggling with mood disorders, intrusive thinking, and difficulty managing emotional regulation or self-control are motivated and resilient in therapy. It has been my honor to work with those who value education and intervention in a therapeutic relationship. My communication style I am relaxed as a therapist. While professional, I believe clients must feel seen and heard as whole people. I value discussion and education in therapy but also believe in building real relationships and learning about who individuals are to support who they hope to be. My journey to mental healthcare I wanted to be a therapist since I was 13, when my best friend struggled with self-harm due to severe, untreated depression. I developed deep compassion and empathy for those hurting deeply but going unseen due to masking.
