Stephanie Fjetland, LCSW

Psychotherapist
TX
I am a licensed clinical social worker treating adults. My specialties include adjustment and life transitions, grief, loss and bereavement, trauma, chronic mood and psychotic disorders and management, issues facing professionals in high-stress priority roles, and nuclear workers seeking or receiving benefits through the Dept of Labor's Energy Employee Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act (EEOICPA). My clinical work has primarily been with voluntary and involuntary adult patients admitted to psychiatric hospitals for treatment. I worked as a therapist, case manager, discharge planner, and court liaison for inpatient psychiatric hospitals in both the rural Amarillo region and the Austin Metroplex. I have treated issues including general symptom management of depression, anxiety, mood, and psychotic disorders; navigating life transitions and change; crisis intervention; trauma; and short-term substance detox. In addition, I have treated more acute patients with complicated issues related to managing and living with chronic mood and psychotic disorders that require full-time monitoring for safety, medication management, support services navigation, and long-term community case management or residential placement. I have a heavy background in navigating social systems across the state and am aware of our state's unique and regionally specific obstacles. I was a case manager for multiple programs in roles that spanned geriatric nursing home and rehabilitation, domestic adoption and foster care, post-adoption, post-abortion, post-adopt reunification, at-risk family development and self-sufficiency case management, poverty prevention, and community action. I hold a Master's in Social Work from West Texas A&M University and a Family Development Certification for self-sufficiency case management through the University of Iowa. I am trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy for trauma and am a certified Reiki Master.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a non judgemental, open minded, and confidential person by nature. I have a client centered, solution focused, goal oriented, and eclectic approach. Whether coping with symptoms, change, loss, burnout, want to change a pattern in thinking or behaviors, or venting and processing, my goal is to assist patients create a path towards their goals and get there. I believe in a holistic, preventative, supportive and empowering approach that validates the patient experience and works to identify patient problems, priorities, and their desired outcomes. From there we can find a path through obstacles and barriers in between. I come from an empowering, strengths, and systems based perspective. My goal is to help patients understand where and cope with their current situation so they can find a way through the issues of now and create a path that leads towards where they want to be. Through processing, goal setting, and skills improvement we work together to find solutions, build resilience and find a “new normal” that preserves the sense of self while improving esteem, social functioning and personal satisfaction.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I offer a free 15 minute initial consultation to allow prospective clients and myself to meet, discuss their specific goals and expectations and determine if they are interested in becoming a patient. I understand seeking mental health care is a very personal journey that requires time and money. I don’t want to waste anyone’s time, insurance, or money. A consult gives us both a quick period for introductions and questions/answers specific to the patient and their needs. I want my potential clients to be able to meet me and determine if they feel I am the right match for them. This also allows me to determine if I am the appropriate clinician for them. If I am not, it allows me a chance to refer to another professional with an approach or skill set that may better meet their needs or preferences without wasting their resources.
