Sometimes we need counseling to deal with people in our lives who have never been to counseling. It could be our parents, partners, friends... as humans, we only control our response to thoughts in our minds and feelings in our bodies, not other people. Our responses can be the difference between living in chaos and living in peace. My approach I believe clients are the experts on themselves. I ask questions to clarify the healthiest versions. Since many external events in our lives are beyond our control, we focus on developing our responses rather than reacting. I use a combination of modalities and adjust to the client's needs. My focus Working with adults, particularly younger adults, is a passion of mine. There are so many opportunities to create a foundation of health for ourselves if we are open to growth. Laying the groundwork early can help us prepare and prevent many of the issues that can challenge us as we age. My communication style Listening to hear, rather than reply, is an important skill for a counselor. That is essential, and if you do not feel heard or understood than I have failed. My clients and I check in regularly to ensure we are on the same page in their story. My journey to mental healthcare I came into the counseling profession later in life. Spending time "on the couch" myself, and working through personal trauma and challenges, grew the desire to assist others in their journey. My first career was in education, which has shaped my desire to educate and empower my clients rather than assume, direct, or give advice. My goals for you Counseling is effective when it provides support during the more challenging times in your life. Intentions rather than goals become our focus. Once your intentions are met and you feel balanced, I encourage clients to step away and live. If "life starts to life" again, you can always return and learn ways to adjust to that stage of life.
