Getting to know Stephen Borgman

Men's counseling in Illinois Are you ready to change your life for the better? I'd like to work with you! Together we can do it. The process is difficult, but the reward is a life that works! I'm here to help you tell your story, identify your vision, purpose, and values. Then we'll chip away at negative thoughts, beliefs, and behavior patterns. My warm, yet challenging, practical, and action-oriented therapy relationship will empower and encourage you to do the work of creating your future. I didn't plan to be a counselor. In fact, through most of my college years, I had no idea what I wanted to do when I grew up. Both my mother and father are people helpers-whether as missionaries or teachers-so it shouldn't have surprised me that I went into a people-helping profession myself. After college, I earned my Master's in Counseling Psychology from Trinity International University. When I took a number of career counseling tests, being a counselor was a good fit. It turned out to be something I loved doing and learning about. I've also worked at a Fortune 500 company for over 14 years. Working in the corporate world has given me a unique appreciation for the pressures, changes, and challenges of working as a man in corporate America.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I grew up in Brazil, South America. From first through third grade, I was the only Caucasian in my all-Brazilian classes. My parents were dedicated to service and helping in their careers, and I both learned from them and share their DNA, which makes me want to help others too. Having grown up "between" Brazilian and North American cultures (I lived 14 years in Brazil and four years in the United States until I was 18), I was a third-culture kid. I knew what it was like to not fully belong as either a Brazilian or an American. As a result of this experience, I prioritize understanding and showing empathy to those who are different from myself, and I place a high value on respecting and understanding who you are and where you're coming from.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

It's important for you to have time to tell your story; that's not always comfortable or concise. My motto is, "Take as much time as you need." Once you are able to talk about your current situation, we can start figuring out your preferred scenario and develop a treatment plan to get you to your visioned outcomes. I assign homework if you want more efficient outcomes. If homework is too much, we can do most of our work during sessions. We measure progress together by reviewing how you feel about your own outcomes and how you are feeling about me as a counselor, the counseling process topics, and the approach.
