Trauma, addiction, depression, mood difficulties, and neurodivergence don't always exist in isolation. These concerns can overlap, influencing how people experience emotions, navigate relationships, and respond to everyday challenges. I work with clients who want to understand these connections, particularly when familiar patterns persist despite their efforts to change. I'm Dr. Stephen W. Bryant, PsyD, LCPC, founder of Stonebridge Psychological Group. My clinical experience spans inpatient psychiatric care, intensive treatment programs, and outpatient psychotherapy, with particular experience in complex and co-occurring mental health concerns. This background informs my psychodynamic and relational approach, which emphasizes understanding the person beyond a diagnosis or collection of symptoms. My style is engaged, thoughtful, and direct. I believe meaningful psychotherapy requires more than applying techniques or managing symptoms. It involves understanding how difficulties develop, recognizing what keeps them in place, and building a therapeutic relationship where difficult questions can be explored honestly. At Stonebridge, that work begins with determining whether we're the right fit.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You can expect a real conversation, not a script. I'm engaged, curious, and straightforward in how I work. I listen carefully, ask questions, and offer direct observations when something seems important. I won't rush you into difficult conversations, but I also won't assume that avoiding something uncomfortable is necessarily helping. You don't need a diagnosis or a polished explanation of your life to begin. Some people come to therapy knowing exactly what they want to discuss. Others have a sense that something isn't working but haven't yet found the words for it. Both are reasonable places to start. I take the therapeutic relationship seriously. That means being thoughtful about what I say, being honest when I see something differently, and making room for you to question my perspective, too. We don't have to agree about everything to do meaningful work. What matters is that we can approach those differences with curiosity and respect.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first conversations are about understanding what's bringing you to therapy, what you've already tried, and what you're hoping might be different. I'll ask about your current concerns, relevant history, relationships, and previous treatment experiences. You will also have the opportunity to ask questions about how I work and whether my approach feels appropriate for you. If we decide to continue, we'll establish a direction for our work without assuming everything needs to follow a predetermined plan. Some sessions may focus on an immediate concern, while others involve taking a closer look at longstanding emotional or relational patterns. We'll periodically consider what's helping, what isn't, and whether our focus needs to change. I also believe it's important to recognize when a different service, treatment approach, or level of care may better meet someone's needs. Those conversations are part of responsible treatment, not a failure of the therapeutic process.

More information on payments and coverage

At Stonebridge Psychological Group, I believe financial considerations should be discussed openly and thoughtfully so that concerns about coverage or cost do not become unnecessary barriers to seeking care. We work with clients to clarify insurance benefits, anticipated out-of-pocket expenses, and available payment options before treatment begins. Stonebridge currently lists Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois, Medicaid Fee-for-Service, and Guidehealth through Advocate Medical Group West among its insurance options. Coverage depends on your specific plan, benefits, and clinician participation. If your insurance is not listed, I encourage you to reach out rather than assume treatment is unavailable. We are continually working to expand our insurance participation, and not finding an immediate in-network match does not necessarily mean that care cannot occur. We can explore other arrangements, including private payment, potential out-of-network benefits, and sliding-scale options. For clients paying privately, standard fees are $275 for a 60-minute initial diagnostic evaluation, $200 for a 45-minute psychotherapy session, and $240 for a 60-minute session. Stonebridge also offers sliding-scale fees to help make treatment more financially accessible. These arrangements are considered individually based on financial circumstances and availability, and I encourage prospective clients to ask about them. A complimentary 10–15-minute consultation is available to discuss clinical fit, insurance questions, fees, and possible next steps. Although insurance verification cannot guarantee reimbursement, our goal is to provide clear information and help you understand your options before making a commitment to treatment. We also request at least 24 hours' notice for appointment cancellations or rescheduling, as late cancellations and missed appointments may result in fees not covered by insurance.
