Dr. Steven Samrock, PhD

Psychotherapist
CA
Hello and welcome to my profile. I am a recently licensed psychologist who has provided therapy and psychological services at the University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB CAPS), Arizona State University’s counseling and clinical psychology centers, and through NIH-funded community outreach programs. I also teach psychology as an adjunct professor at The City University of New York (CUNY SPS). I am a Los Angeles native (from San Fernando Valley) with a past career in entertainment marketing, advertising, and international education. The fact that I don't come from an exclusively clinical background shapes how I show up in the room. I’m especially drawn to working with men who are new to therapy; creative professionals; LGBTQ+ individuals facing minority stress; immigrants and children of immigrants.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to therapy is humanistic at its core meaning the relationship we build is central to treatment, not just a backdrop for techniques. That said, I integrate a wide-ranging toolkit to match your concerns. Whether you're facing persistent worry/anxiety, low mood/depression, shame, low self-esteem, disconnection in relationships, neurodiversity, trauma, major life transitions, career issues, I’m here to help. I'm more collaborative than prescriptive and we'll work together on setting the direction for our work.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Expect real and deeply meaningful conversations. The first session is about giving you a chance to express your concern and giving me a chance to understand your world. We'll talk about what you're hoping to get out of therapy, and I'll share how I work so you can decide if this feels right. There's no pressure to have it all figured out before you arrive — I welcome you just as you are.
