“We are so thankful to have worked with Summer. When we first came for couples therapy, we were struggling with communication and felt disconnected. From the very first session, Summer made us feel comfortable and supported. She listened to our perspectives with empathy and without judgment, helping us understand each other in new ways. The strategies and tools we’ve learned have been incredibly helpful—especially when it comes to handling disagreements and improving communication... Highly Recommended!”

Getting to know Summer Cartwright

I am a dedicated and compassionate mental health therapist with extensive experience providing care to adolescents, adults, couples, families, and groups across diverse community agency settings. I hold a Master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a Bachelor's degree from the University of North Texas. My expertise includes working with individuals navigating substance use disorders, dual-diagnosis, and severe and persistent mental illnesses. I am also trained in EMDR therapy. My professional background is enriched by specialized training in addiction treatment, women-specific and LGBTQ+ issues, crisis intervention, career development, trauma-focused therapy, couples counseling, group therapy, and grief counseling. I bring a trauma-informed, client-centered approach to my work, aiming to create a safe, supportive environment where clients feel heard and empowered. With a strong commitment to cultural competence, I am proficient in counseling clients from a variety of backgrounds, religions, and cultures. My practice emphasizes respect for each client's unique experiences and identities, integrating evidence-based techniques to support their journey toward healing, resilience, and personal growth. I am passionate about fostering meaningful therapeutic relationships that inspire change and transformation, guiding individuals, couples, and families to achieve their goals and improve their overall well-being.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to therapy is rooted in Gestalt theory and practice, with the flexibility to incorporate other methods depending on the client’s needs or the stage of treatment. For example, I may use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for addressing addictions or compulsions, Motivational Interviewing or Solution-Focused techniques for short-term therapy, and a Person-Centered approach when working with grief and loss. In Gestalt therapy, the focus is on enhancing your awareness of your experiences. As your therapist, I may suggest ways to deepen this awareness, aiming to help you uncover your natural capacity for self-regulation, build fulfilling connections with others, and explore disowned aspects of yourself to achieve a greater sense of wholeness.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach emphasizes techniques that bring attention to bodily sensations, emotional responses, desires, and thought patterns to identify your core needs and discover new ways to meet them. I believe that accepting your life experiences as valid and using them as tools for growth is essential to becoming a more balanced, healthier version of yourself.
