Getting to know Susan Maroto

Throughout my career, I have had many roles, all of which involved helping people in some way. I have worked in schools, residential treatment centers, adoption agencies, and in private practice as a therapist. I hold a Bachelor’s degree from Haverford College and a Master’s in Social Work from Bryn Mawr College. I enjoy working with older teens, adults, seniors, and couples. While I assist many individuals who are coping with depression and/or anxiety, grief and loss, and relationship issues, I also have expertise with infertility, pregnancy, adoption preparation, and the transition to new parenthood, including postpartum depression and anxiety. For 10 years, I ran a support group for women struggling with infertility through RESOLVE, a nationwide clearinghouse for information, referrals, and support through the family-building process. I’ve worked with birth parents, young and adult adoptees, and adoptive parents. Through my own experiences with an autoimmune illness, I have learned a vast amount about alternative, holistic, integrative, and functional medicine approaches to health. This is an area of tremendous interest for me, and I love to share the information I have learned over the years. I support the use of psychotropic medicine as needed, and for many people, it provides relief. For individuals for whom these medications do not work or who are disinclined to take them for any reason, there are many herbal, amino acid, and other supplements that generally have a low toxicity profile and can be highly effective in helping people achieve balance and emotional equanimity.

What should a new client know about working with you?

. In person appointments are offered on Monday and Thursday, 10:00 to 5:00 in Media, PA. It may be possible to book an appointment before 10 or after 5 if you have a strong preference for an in person appointment and are unable to make it between 10 and 5. Virtual appointments are offered on other days of the week, usually in the late afternoons, as well as sometimes on the weekends. In addition, the appointments which are available for in person visits can also be conducted virtually if the client prefers it. I know that starting with a new therapist can be overwhelming and intimidating - having to tell your whole story to a complete stranger! We will go at your pace, and you can always decline to answer any questions that you're not ready to delve into.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I like to find out what you would like to achieve in your therapy sessions and assist you with those goals to the best of my ability. I favor a collaborative approach - I'd like for you to tell me what has and has not been effective for you in the past with prior therapists (if applicable) as well as things I have said and done in sessions that have - or have not! - been helpful so I can tailor my approach to you. E.M.D.R., or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is an excellent trauma resolution technique in which I am trained. When appropriate, I use this modality with clients. I also frequently draw on strategies from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or CBT, as well as many other approaches and strategies.

I initially began seeing Susan for grief counseling. During those first encounters, I quickly realized I was in the right place for the help I needed during that difficult time. She showed empathy, compassion, kindness, and most important of all, direction and support in helping me navigate my way through a very traumatic time. I’ve continued to meet with Susan in the years since then because I value the insight and guidance she provides regarding everyday issues and management of life’s stressors. She is patient, organized, nonjudgmental, and a great listener! Susan’s guidance and expertise have been instrumental in helping me find my way through many of life’s challenges. I would highly recommend Susan to anyone seeking help with identifying feelings and emotions, clarifying goals and plans, and developing strategies for an improved quality of life.
Susan was a fantastic resource at a time when I needed it. She listened and gave me tools to better communicate with my significant other. In addition to those tools, she is well-versed in natural remedies and I have implemented several of her strategies, resulting in better sleep and less stress. What I really needed was a voice of reason and immediate fixes and Susan provided that. In session, if there was a fix to an issue, she shared it. She helped me with me, helped me with my significant other, and helped me with an in-law and I am most grateful. Through her, I learned that it's ok to feel what I feel, but through those feelings, learn from them and how to navigate through them.
I have had the privilege of working with Susan Maroto as my therapist for the past eight years, and I can confidently say that she has been instrumental in transforming my life. Susan also served as my couples therapist, helping my partner and me navigate challenges and strengthen our relationship. Her ability to create a safe, nonjudgmental space for communication is remarkable. From our first session, Susan’s warmth and empathy put me at ease. Susan has helped me identify and address patterns in my behavior and thought processes. Her expertise in therapeutic techniques, including cognitive-behavioral therapy and mindfulness, has equipped me with tools to manage stress, anxiety, and emotional challenges. I feel empowered to handle situations that once overwhelmed me. Thanks to Susan’s guidance, I’ve experienced personal growth, improved relationships, and greater emotional well-being. I am deeply grateful for her support and the positive changes she has helped me achieve.
Susan is a total professional. Always available . She has helped me through some difficult times over the years. She makes you feel that you are her No. 1 priority -always. I Highly recommend her!
I’ve been a client of Susan’s for more than a decade. She has a natural gift for being a therapist who uses her insight to be a quick study into situations, is nonjudgemental as she listens and offers a variety of pragmatic, actionable options for how I can improve things. She’s trustworthy and empathetic – I’ve referred several people to her with confidence. On the business side, she’s always flexible to find slots that work for me and knows how to navigate the payment process with insurance companies.
