Susan Ward, LCMHC

Susan Ward, LCMHC

Psychotherapist
NC
Do you have those annoying thoughts that ramble around your head all day and then keep you awake at night? Do you panic in social settings? Do you need afternoon and late evening sessions remotely? I love working with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, and general mood disorders. These issues are so prevalent and can sometimes seem to appear out of nowhere. Therapy and growth can be scary, but come take that first brave step with me. Don’t worry about commuting to an office—we can meet online, completely from the comfort of your home or anywhere private. I’m a creative therapist who likes to step outside the box. So much of growth happens outside of therapy as you continue to process what was discussed and learned in our sessions. I call this “growth work.” I also believe that within ourselves, we have everything needed to reach our goals by searching within and having a therapeutic guide. I earned my Master’s in Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, which has equipped me with the skills to support you on this journey. Search within. How would you know if you’ve met all your therapy goals? What would that look like for you? What would be different? You deserve to live a full, happy life—be gentle with yourself.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe that building a healthy therapeutic relationship is key to mental health counseling so this is where I'll start. I like to know more about my clients other than the reason they're seeking counseling. I'm an encourager but I'm also one to push if that's what the client agrees to. I like to celebrate my clients' progress, no matter how small they appear to be. I'm a big proponent of practicing skills outside of the session, especially working with coping skills. The client needs to be familiar with the skill so it can be employed at the time of triggers.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Background history is gathered through the intake process. If the client presents with an already given diagnosis we will begin working there and tailor it as needed. I like to understand the clients' therapy goals from the start to use as a marker for progress or regress. Therapy is not a linear even so expect some changes to the plan along the way.
