Taemin Ahn, LCSW

Taemin Ahn, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NY
Welcome! You may be coming to therapy as you navigate a world that feels violent and marginalizing, despite all the self-care you've tried. Perhaps you're coping well, but unable to shake off feelings of vigilance and grief that feel frozen in time. Therapy can be a space to identify how patterns from your past and present shape your relationships, and to unpack some of those past memories to help you move forward. I am a queer, Korean, nonbinary therapist. In individual therapy, I blend trauma work (EMDR, IFS) with more traditional psychodynamic therapy. I also enjoy working with couples and families, and I have experience in working with relationship units of all shapes and sizes. I completed specialty training in queer- and gender-affirming therapy at the Ackerman Institute for the Family and at Mount Sinai's Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery. I have deep experience working through both social and medical transition, especially lower surgery. I also write letters of support for gender-affirming surgery.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy is hard work! I blend a warm and caring regard for my clients with a direct, no-nonsense approach. You are taking the time and energy to show up week after week. In turn, I make a commitment to be fully engaged with you during session and to challenge you when there are topics that feel stuck, avoidant, or dissociated. I use body-focused techniques to help you rebuild your emotional connection to your body. Therapy can leave you feeling vulnerable or tender, so I will always take time at the end of session to ease you back into the rest of your day.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I usually meet with clients on a weekly basis. If you are interested in learning more, please reach out for a 15-minute consultation so that we can discuss whether I would be a good fit for your needs. The single most important part of therapy is a strong, trusting relationship between the client and the therapist, so my top priority is finding you that secure fit.
