Getting to know Tanner Zimmerman

With nearly a decade in the mental health field and extensive training across diverse therapeutic approaches, I lead a practice grounded in integrative, trauma-informed, and deeply affirming care. My career began in community-based mental health before I transitioned into private practice, specializing in work with adults navigating trauma, relationship dynamics, gender identity, ENM/polyamory, kink, and self-worth, particularly within queer and geek culture communities. My clinical background draws from experiential, feminist, queer, systems, and narrative theories, along with EMDR, Gottman principles, and Internal Family Systems (IFS). In my role as a clinical supervisor, I am passionate about mentoring talented clinicians while providing high-quality, accessible care to our community. When you book an appointment through this profile, you will be matched with one of my exceptional graduate student therapists who are completing their Master’s degrees in Marriage and Family Therapy. Our therapists bring rich previous careers in special education, teaching, and youth advocacy into the therapy room. Their work combines a warm, grounded, and attentive presence with integrative approaches including somatic practices, narrative therapy, CBT, and solution-focused models. Behind the scenes, I provide close, weekly clinical supervision for every client in our practice, alongside the oversight our therapists receive through their university faculties. This collaborative model ensures that while your direct sessions are with a dedicated therapist, your care is supported by an entire team committed to your growth and healing.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with our practice means entering a thoughtful, collaborative care model designed around your safety, autonomy, and growth. The most important thing to know is that your direct therapy sessions will be held with one of my graduate student therapists. Both of our clinicians are marriage and family therapists in training with extensive backgrounds in education and human services, bringing deep life experience, systemic perspective, and genuine empathy to their clinical work. Because our therapists are in the advanced stages of their clinical training, your care benefits from a multi-layered support network. I closely supervise their work behind the scenes, meeting with them regularly to review treatment plans and offer clinical guidance. In addition, they receive university clinical supervision, meaning multiple seasoned professionals are thoughtfully holding space for your care and progress. After you submit an initial request, I will reach out directly to coordinate next steps. During this initial contact, you are welcome to express a preference for a specific therapist based on their background and focus areas (such as somatic practices, parenting and family support, or queer identity exploration) or I can help recommend the best fit for your unique goals. Across our practice, we believe therapy should be a place where you can bring your whole, unfiltered self without judgment. Our style is warm, direct, and down-to-earth. We blend curiosity, compassion, reflection, and humor to create an authentic space where you feel seen and valued. Whether you are navigating life transitions, family-of-origin patterns, trauma, grief, or identity exploration, our therapists offer a grounded space where you are deeply supported on your journey.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our process begins as soon as you book a session here. As the clinical supervisor, I will personally reach out to connect with you, discuss what you are looking for in therapy, and ensure you are paired with the therapist who best aligns with your needs, schedule, and personal preferences. Once matched, your initial sessions with your therapist focus on building trust and establishing a safe, comfortable foundation. Together, you will explore what brought you to therapy, examine how past experiences and systemic factors may inform current patterns, and identify goals that truly resonate with you, whether that involves processing trauma, navigating relationship complexities, exploring identity, or managing daily stressors. In regular sessions, you can expect a relaxed, client-centered environment where you lead the direction. Your therapist brings frameworks based in somatic practices, narrative therapy, systems theory, CBT, and mindfulness, but adapts each session to where you are on any given day. Sessions often balance deep emotional reflection with practical tools, curiosity, and humor to keep the experience grounded, authentic, and human. Throughout your therapeutic journey, your care is continuously supported behind the scenes. Your therapist and I meet regularly for clinical supervision to reflect on your progress, refine therapeutic strategies, and ensure your treatment remains dynamic and held with the utmost care. Ultimately, therapy with us is an evolving, collaborative conversation. We regularly check in on how the therapeutic relationship feels and adjust our approach as you grow, ensuring you always feel respected, understood, and supported in stepping into your true self.
