Tanory Ateek, LCSW - C

Psychotherapist
8403 Colesville Rd, Ste 1100, Silver Spring, MD
Working with me, people often say they feel more integrated in body, mind, and spirit, and more awake and powerful in their lives. That kind of shift is what I aim for as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) specializing in trauma and complex trauma across the lifespan. I came to this work as a third-career clinician, drawing on a wealth of experience from other fields, especially my cross-cultural work in international relief and development, and my years as a yoga and meditation teacher and bodyworker. Don't worry, I won't make you meditate if you don't want to; I find that everyone has their own way of slowing down and finding their center. I believe in meeting people with curiosity rather than judgment, and in trusting that even the parts of us that seem messy, stuck, or self-defeating developed for a reason. That's what allows me to be deeply compassionate without losing sight of your capacity for change. I look forward to helping you understand yourself with more kindness, reconnect with what makes you feel most alive, and find your way toward a life that feels more fully and authentically yours.

What should a new client know about working with you?

DISCLAIMER: We are not able to accept Medicare or Medicaid plans at this time. My path to becoming a therapist has been a bit of a meandering adventure. Along the way, I've earned a master's degree in Intercultural Studies, worked in international relief and development in several countries, and been a teacher, trainer, artist, activist, bodyworker, and facilitator of more yoga and meditation retreats and courses than I can count. Becoming a therapist was always somewhere in the background, a dream I kept circling back to and finally committed to seven years ago. I'm deeply grateful to bring all of those experiences, perspectives, and ways of understanding people into the work I do now.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Therapy, I believe, should be about more than just feeling less anxious, depressed, or overwhelmed. It's also about paying attention to what makes you feel alive: what brings you joy, pleasure, a sense of connection, trust, and purpose. I'm trained in a range of therapeutic approaches and draw from them flexibly depending on who you are, what you're navigating, and what you hope to get out of therapy. These approaches may include play therapy, family therapy, somatic experiencing, EMDR, and mindfulness. Somatic and nervous-system work is a particular focus of mine, helping you feel more grounded, connected, and at home in yourself, even when life around you feels anything but settled. I work with people of all backgrounds, and especially love working with neurodivergent folks and people whose identities or ways of moving through the world haven't always been fully understood, affirmed, or welcomed. Together, we'll clarify what you want for your life and identify meaningful progress toward those goals, whether you're seeking relief from anxiety or depression, greater self-understanding, healing from past experiences, navigating a transition, or building new ways of relating to yourself and others. I'll support you in moving toward growth at a pace that feels right for you. You'll find a warm, compassionate space here, one that's queer-affirming, neuro-affirming, and welcoming of all the parts of you. I often bring creativity into the room, especially when what you're carrying feels too painful, complicated, or hard to put into words. Curious, creative, and full of humor when it fits, that's my style, and there's no one-size-fits-all approach: we'll shape the work around who you are, what you need, and what helps you feel most like yourself.
