Tara Arutunian, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NY
I’m a licensed clinical social worker specializing in narcissistic relationships recovery, relational trauma, and helping adults break free from patterns of over-giving rooted in childhood. I work with those navigating divorce, parenting, boundary development, and identity rebuilding. I bring lived experience and extensive training to this work—psychoanalytic psychotherapy, CBT, mentalization-based treatment, somatic approaches, and psychedelic integration. This kind of therapy is not a quick fix, so it’s likely 2-3 years of deep work, sometimes longer. I help people understand the conditioning and relational patterns creating their difficult circumstances. We work on nervous system regulation, seeing others and ourselves clearly, and building connections based on mutual respect, rather than guilt or obligation.

Getting to know Tara Arutunian

What should a new client know about working with you?

I’m direct, warm, and honest. I’ll work to understand you, gently challenge patterns, name what I see, and help you connect the dots between your past and present. My approach is relational and psychoanalytically informed, meaning we look at patterns, especially the ones that keep repeating in your relationships. But insight alone isn’t enough so we also work with your nervous system so you can actually feel different, not just understand why you do what you do. I’ll help you integrate somatic awareness (paying attention to what’s happening in your body) as well as what’s happening in your thoughts. This helps with regulation, boundaries, and trusting yourself again. I’m here to help you see clearly, reconnect with your own knowing, and make choices from a grounded place, rather than fear or obligation.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Sessions are ~50 minutes. We start with whatever’s most alive for you: what happened that week, what’s weighing on you, or something you’ve been avoiding. From there, we go deeper. If I’m noticing a pattern, I’ll ask questions, and help you connect present struggles to their roots. If something’s happening in your body (tension, shutdown, a bad feeling), we’ll slow down and attend to that too. I’m tracking the relational dynamics you describe and will reflect what I notice. Sometimes that’s validating, sometimes it’s uncomfortable, but it’s always in service of helping you see yourself more clearly. Sessions aren’t about venting or getting advice. They’re about understanding your patterns, regulating your nervous system, and building the capacity to show up differently in your life and relationships.
