Psychotherapist

I’m Terry Harbolick, LCMHCA, NCC, NCSC. I grew up in New Jersey, spent time in Virginia, and now call North Carolina home. I earned my Bachelor’s in Psychology from Susquehanna University and my Master’s in Counseling, with a focus in School Counseling, from Marymount University, and I’m currently working toward full LCMHC-A licensure. Before moving into private practice, I worked as a school counselor and mental health interventionist — experience that shaped my belief that strong, genuine relationships are the foundation of effective therapy. I work with teens, adults, couples, and families, using a practical, strengths-based approach to help you build stress management skills and navigate life’s challenges with more confidence, alongside training in the Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) for nervous system regulation. My goal is simple: to build a real relationship with you and give you tools you can actually use.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I bring a practical, down-to-earth approach to our sessions — you can expect real conversation and tools you can use right away, not just talk for talk’s sake. I believe strong, genuine relationships are the foundation of good therapy, so building trust with you comes first. If you’re a teen, we’ll work through stress, emotions, and the school, identity, and relationship pressures that come with this stage of life. If you’re an adult, we’ll focus on recognizing patterns, reducing stress, and building daily tools that fit your life. And if you’re coming in as a couple or family, I’ll help you improve communication and work through conflict together. Whatever brings you in, I want you to leave sessions with more confidence and practical ways to move forward.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Before your first session, our Client Care Coordinator, Heather, will reach out to complete paperwork and make sure I’m a good match for what you’re looking for — so your first session isn’t spent filling out forms. The first one to three sessions are about getting to know you, understanding what brings you to therapy, and identifying what you’d like to work toward. For teens, a parent joins the first session; for couples, both partners attend together. From there, therapy is tailored to you rather than following a one-size-fits-all approach. We’ll develop goals together based on what matters most to you. You’re the expert on your life, and I bring the clinical knowledge and tools. We’ll adjust our approach as your needs change, often beginning with weekly sessions and spacing them out as you make progress.
