I am a Clinical Psychologist in private practice in Tuckahoe, New York since 1993. I share my practice with my wife, Susan Fischer, PhD, who is also a clinical psychologist. In addition to my private practice, I recently concluded 33 years of work in the school system where I supported emotionally vulnerable students facing anxiety, depression, learning challenges, and school-related stress. In my private practice, I work with adults, adolescents, children, and families, and I also provide parent coaching to help caregivers better manage challenges at home. I use an individualized approach that draws from psychodynamic, interpersonal, and behavioral therapies, tailoring treatment to each client’s goals, needs, and preferences.

Getting to know Thomas Fischer

What should a new client know about working with you?

New clients often describe me as supportive and collaborative. My goal is to help you gain greater clarity about your experiences, identify what you want to change or improve, and develop realistic, meaningful paths toward those goals. I bring decades of experience working with a wide range of emotional and life challenges, and I adapt my style to meet you where you are. I'm invested in a sliding-scale fee structure since the start of my practice in order to assist in making care available to those who need it. I welcome initial consultations to help determine whether working together feels like a good fit.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My process begins with getting to know you including your concerns, history, and what has brought you to therapy at this point in your life. Early sessions focus on building a strong therapeutic relationship and clarifying your goals, such as symptom relief, improved relationships, parenting support and greater self-understanding. I tailor treatment using a flexible blend of psychodynamic, interpersonal, and behavioral approaches, depending on your needs and preferences. Throughout our work together, we regularly check in about what is helpful and adjust strategies as needed. I work at a pace that feels supportive and productive.
