“Thomas was absolutely wonderful--attentive, timely, and took the time to build a rapport with me. He asked tough questions and gave homework assignments (usually journal prompts) to help me reflect on and interrupt the behaviors I wanted to change. While we were not a long term match, I am glad I had my time with him.”

Getting to know Thomas Oriol

I am a Mental Health Counselor with a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the College of Staten Island. I work with young adults, adults, and couples, providing a thoughtful, structured, and compassionate therapeutic space that supports healing, insight, and personal growth. As an LGBTQ+ individual myself, I bring both clinical training and lived experience to my work, offering care that is informed, affirming, and grounded in an understanding of how identity, safety, and connection impact mental health and relationships. My therapeutic approach is holistic, trauma-informed, and person-centered. I integrate evidence-based modalities including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), mindfulness-based interventions, and trauma-informed care. When working with couples, I focus on communication patterns, emotional safety, attachment dynamics, and conflict resolution. Across all work, interventions are tailored to each client or relationship’s unique needs, with attention to emotional regulation, cognitive patterns, and the mind–body connection. I specialize in working with trauma, including women’s trauma and intimate partner violence, depression, LGBTQ+ and TGNC-affirming care, and relational concerns. Many of the individuals and couples I work with are navigating the effects of chronic stress, identity-related challenges, communication difficulties, or the lasting impact of trauma on relationships. Whether you are seeking individual support, relational repair, or greater emotional clarity, I strive to provide a safe, respectful, and affirming environment that supports meaningful and sustainable change.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Clients often describe my style as calm, supportive, and attentive. I prioritize creating a therapeutic relationship built on trust, emotional safety, and collaboration. My approach is nonjudgmental and inclusive of all identities and relationship structures, with particular care given to ensuring LGBTQ+ and TGNC individuals and couples feel understood and affirmed. In sessions, I balance clinical insight with warmth and accessibility. I believe therapy should feel both supportive and purposeful, and I take time to explain the rationale behind interventions so clients and couples feel informed and engaged in the process. My role is to provide structure, guidance, and clinical expertise while honoring each person’s lived experience.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The initial phase of therapy focuses on developing a clear understanding of your history, current concerns, relational dynamics, and therapeutic goals. Together, we establish a treatment plan that feels collaborative, realistic, and aligned with your needs. I am attentive to pacing, particularly when working with trauma or relational distress, to ensure sessions remain grounded and supportive. Ongoing sessions may include processing current stressors, exploring emotional and relational patterns, strengthening communication and regulation skills, and integrating trauma-informed and mindfulness-based strategies. For couples, sessions may focus on improving communication, increasing emotional attunement, and addressing patterns that contribute to disconnection or conflict. Throughout our work, I regularly assess progress and adjust our approach as needed, with the goal of supporting clarity, emotional stability, and healthier, more resilient relationships.
