Thomas Overman, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NC
Hey, I’m Brent! I’m a licensed therapist (LCSW) with 14+ years in the mental health world, and I’m all about creating a space where you can show up as yourself and actually feel supported. I work with individuals, couples, and I also offer clinical supervision—so whether you’re here for personal growth or professional support, I’ve got you. I graduated from UNC Wilmington and got my MSW from USC, and since then I’ve worked pretty much everywhere—correctional facilities, in-home family programs, community mental health—you name it. That variety helps me really get people and understand the different challenges life can throw your way. I specialize in helping folks move through anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, life transitions, and those “what is even happening right now?” moments we all face. My style is warm, down-to-earth, and personalized. I don’t do cookie-cutter therapy. We’ll talk, laugh, reflect, and dig into what actually helps you feel better and more grounded. Wherever you’re starting, we’ll go at your pace and build a plan that works for you. My goal is simple: help you feel supported, empowered, and equipped to handle whatever comes next.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Clients often tell me I’m warm, easygoing, and really easy to talk to. My goal is to create a space where you can show up exactly as you are and feel safe, heard, and understood. I’m not here to judge or tell you how to live your life—I’m here to help you get to know yourself better, build healthier coping skills, and feel more grounded and empowered. I also like to bring humor and lightness into our sessions when it makes sense. Therapy can be a place where you laugh, cry, vent, and everything in between—whatever you’re feeling is welcome. I’m an active therapist, so you won’t just be talking into the void. I ask questions, share reflections, and gently point out patterns that might be getting in your way. We’ll set goals together and work on practical tools you can actually use in real life. Most importantly, we’ll go at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our first session, we’ll spend time getting to know each other—what’s been going on for you, what you want to work on, and what you’re hoping to change or understand. I’ll ask some questions just to get the full picture of your life and what you’re dealing with, and together we’ll figure out what feels most important to focus on. As we keep working together, sessions are usually a mix of honest conversation, exploring patterns, and checking in with how you’re feeling. I use different tools—like CBT strategies, mindfulness, or practical skill-building—depending on what fits you best. I check in often to make sure you feel supported, understood, and that we’re actually making progress toward your goals. Overall, my approach is relaxed, collaborative, and tailored to your pace. I’m here to help you gain insight, build healthier coping skills, and make real, meaningful changes in your life—without pressure or judgment.
