Getting to know Thorin Holley

I retired from the Army in 2014. Mental health was a part of my career experience, whether I was coaching/mentoring my soldiers through their own struggles or helping victims of crime. I was always fascinated by the cognitive, behavioral and emotional interactions and how differently we can perceive and react to the same circumstances. Therapy gives me an opportunity to learn from my clients and be a part of helping them find a path that leads to a more fulfilling life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I love dad jokes and bad jokes. I think of an initial session as a getting-to-know-you session while you get a feel for how “pun-tacular” my jokes are. I tend to be client-focused and incorporate elements of mindfulness, CBT assignments, ACT, SFBT, and existential philosophy (such as stoicism). Sometimes, you may just need me to hear what you are experiencing, and that’s okay, too.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I geek out on the increasing information on how the brain changes as we engage in therapy. I tend to follow developments in understanding how the brain changes as we develop new neural connections as well as how the body, brain, and our emotions interact or respond to our experiences. A core belief of mine is that we are all doing the best we can. Our best is impacted by our knowledge, culture, upbringing, learned coping skills, and how we interpret our experiences. We do the best we can until we find a path that is more fulfilling.
