Thuy Tran, MA

Psychotherapist
AZ
I was born in Vietnam and immigrated to the U.S. at age 12 — an experience that shaped my deep appreciation for identity, resilience, and cultural connection. I’m fluent in both Vietnamese and English, and I bring that bicultural perspective into my work. Outside of sessions, I recharge through hiking and time in nature. As a trauma-informed and culturally responsive counselor, I support teens and adults navigating depression, anxiety, relationship challenges, and identity-related stress. I specialize in working with BIPOC clients and draw from evidence-based approaches like ACT, EMDR, and IFS to help people build insight, process pain, and reconnect with their inner strength.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Based on my experience, I have found that my approach and style are a good fit for BIPOC & Asian American Experiences, and Children of Immigrants who suffer from Childhood Trauma & Complex PTSD, Dissociative Experiences, Grief & Loss, Anxiety & Depression, Body Image Issues, Relationship & Attachment Challenges. I prioritize clear, open communication to create a supportive, non-judgmental environment. I practice active listening and will give you opportunities to reflect on your experiences with you as an empathetic partner. If we’re working through something challenging, we can pause and check in, and reflect in the present moment. In our work together, I create a safe, culturally sensitive space where you feel seen, heard, and empowered. Whether you're navigating trauma, anxiety, depression, or identity-related stress, we begin by exploring what matters most to you—your values, your hopes, and the changes you want to see. We collaboratively identify clear, meaningful goals that reflect your unique needs and circumstances. These might include improving emotional regulation, building self-esteem, processing trauma, or strengthening relationships. I use structured assessments and open dialogue to ensure your goals are both realistic and motivating.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Growing up as a Vietnamese American, I witnessed firsthand how cultural expectations, intergenerational dynamics, and unspoken emotional struggles can deeply impact mental health. I saw how stigma around therapy often kept people from seeking help, even when they were hurting. These experiences planted a seed in me—a desire to create a space where people, especially those from marginalized or bicultural backgrounds, could feel truly seen and supported. What draws me to this field every day is the privilege of walking alongside clients as they reconnect with their strengths, rewrite their narratives, and move toward healing. I’m especially honored to support first- and second-generation Asian Americans who are navigating the complexities of cultural identity, family expectations, and emotional wellness. Whether in English or Vietnamese, in-person or online, my goal is to offer therapy that feels safe, affirming, and transformative.
