Psychotherapist
1433 N 1075 W, #120, Farmington, UT
I’m a social work intern at Life Matters Counseling, and I specialize in helping children in 2nd through 7th grade who are working through anxiety, big feelings, stress, friendship struggles, low confidence, or challenges at home or school. Before becoming a therapist, I spent more than 12 years supporting children in schools through behavior support and intervention, social-emotional learning, and student services. That experience gave me a deep understanding of how emotional and behavioral struggles show up in kids’ everyday lives, and how much it matters when a child feels truly understood. My approach is child-centered, relationship-focused, and trauma-informed. I start by building a safe, trusting connection, then tailor our work to each child’s strengths, needs, and developmental level. Together, we build practical skills for calming big emotions, coping with worry and stress, solving problems, communicating clearly, and handling friendships. I also help kids recognize what they’re good at, so they can face hard situations feeling more capable and confident. I partner with parents throughout the process so the progress we make in sessions carries over into home and school. I provide services under the clinical supervision of Hailey VanZweden, LCSW

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is warm, patient, and playful. Kids don’t usually open up by sitting still and answering questions, so I meet them where they are, using games, drawing, stories, and hands-on activities to help them talk about feelings and practice new skills in a way that feels natural and fun. I focus first on building trust. When children feel safe and accepted, they’re more willing to try new things, make mistakes, and share what’s really going on. I keep things positive and strengths-based, celebrating small wins so kids see their own progress. I’m also practical. Each session gives kids simple, concrete tools they can use at home and school, like calming strategies, ways to put feelings into words, and steps for working through a problem. I keep parents in the loop with what we’re working on and ideas for supporting their child between sessions, because kids grow fastest when the adults around them are on the same team.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Sessions usually last about 50 minutes and follow a simple, predictable rhythm, which helps kids feel comfortable and know what to expect. Check-in: We start by catching up on how the week went, including what felt good and what felt hard. Sometimes that’s a quick conversation, and sometimes it’s a feelings game or drawing. Skill-building: Next, we focus on the goal we’re working on, like calming worried thoughts, handling frustration, or solving a friendship problem. I teach skills through play, role-play, stories, and hands-on activities so kids can practice in a low-pressure way. Wrap-up: We end by reviewing what we practiced and choosing one small thing to try before next time. Parent connection: I often take a few minutes at the beginning or end of the session to check in with parents, share what we worked on, and suggest simple ways to support their child at home.
