Getting to know Timothy Devitt
Tim Devitt, Psy.D., MS.Ed., LCPC, CADC is a licensed clinical professional counselor and certified alcohol and drug counselor in private practice. He earned his Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Adler University and holds a Master's degree in Counseling as well as a Bachelor's degree from the University of Dayton. He completed an internship at the Illinois Youth Center in St. Charles. Dr. Devitt has dedicated over 30 years to the study, research, and practice of therapy for individuals experiencing mental health and substance use challenges.
In addition to his private practice, Dr. Devitt provides clinical consultation to a variety of substance use treatment and mental health recovery programs. His previous clinical roles include vice president of clinical operations, program director, staff trainer, team leader, and homeless outreach worker. He served as lead clinician for mental health and substance use treatment research studies affiliated with Thresholds, a large mental health organization in Chicago, and the Dartmouth Psychiatric Research Center at Dartmouth College's Geisel School of Medicine, Department of Community and Family Medicine. Dr. Devitt is also a lecturer at the University of Chicago's Crown Family School of Social Work, Policy and Practice, has served as Senior Instructor at Adler University's Online Campus (MA in Psychology Program), is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers, and is a board member and past president of the Board of Directors for Serenity Academy of Chicago, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) dedicated to forming Alternative Peer Groups and launching a recovery high school in Chicago.
Dr. Devitt is the proud recipient of the 2022 William L. White Lifetime Achievement Award from the Illinois Association of Addiction Professionals, Illinois Chapter of the National Association for Addiction Professionals.
What should a new client know about working with you?
I am a therapist working with teens and adults in the Chicago area and Illinois. My focus is on helping people continue their forward movement in life in ways that are personally meaningful for them. My approach in therapy is collaborative, where we work together to identify goals and the best approaches for achieving them. Clients will find an accepting and listening ear, with a focus on making positive change according to their own goals and how they want their life to be.
I have training and experience in a number of therapeutic practices, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Adlerian Psychotherapy. One special area of experience for me is addressing mental health and substance use problems together in an integrated manner. It is very common for people who have experienced depression, anxiety, or the psychological effects from trauma, to also use substances to the point where it becomes an issue they want to address. I approach my work with clients experiencing such co-occurring issues with compassion, acceptance, and hopeful encouragement.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
We typically will start with an interview and assessment that will help me better understand you and your presenting problem and the areas you want to address. From there we will go over the best approach based on your specific goals. Some people experience issues that can be resolved quickly with counseling. Others may choose a more in depth exploration through psychotherapy, where we seek to understand how formative experiences are playing out in current day behavior, relationships, decisions, and overall satisfaction in life.
