Dr. Timothy Nguyen, PsyD, LCSW

Psychotherapist
11501 Dublin Blvd, Ste 200, Dublin, CA
I work with couples who are tired of having the same fight. Individuals who wake up anxious before the day has even started. Teenagers who are carrying more than anyone around them realizes. I specialize in couples counseling, anxiety, and depression, and I bring professional training to each. For couples I use Emotionally Focused Therapy. For anxiety I draw on exposure-focused CBT. I also offer EMDR, especially for clients with PTSD and traumatic experiences. Clients often tell me our work together was the first time they felt genuinely understood rather than managed. My practice is in Dublin, CA and I see clients both in person and via telehealth across California. A free 10-minute consultation is the best place to start.

Getting to know Dr. Timothy Nguyen

What should a new client know about working with you?

A question I hear often is whether this will be like the therapy someone tried before, where they sat across from someone who just nodded, asked how that made them feel, and things went nowhere or quietly got worse. It is one of the most common things people bring up when they are looking for a different therapist, and I understand why. That experience is real and it puts people off trying again longer than they should wait. So here is what I want you to know. I am direct. I am warm. And I am not going to sit across from you and nod for 50 minutes without saying anything useful. Most of my clients come in feeling like they have already tried to fix things on their own and hit a wall. Couples who love each other but cannot stop hurting each other. People with anxiety who know their thoughts are irrational but cannot make them stop anyway. Teens who are exhausted by the pressure of performing for everyone around them. You do not need to know exactly what you need before you reach out. That is what the first session is for. If you have been putting this off, you are not alone in that. Most people wait longer than they wish they had. Reach out today and let's schedule for a complimentary 10-minute phone call.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session is really just a conversation. I want to hear what brought you in, what you have already tried, and honestly, what you are hoping your life feels like when things are better. From there we build a unique plan together that actually fits you, not some generic template. For couples, I use Emotionally Focused Therapy. It works by getting underneath the argument to what is really going on emotionally. Most couples are having the same few fights on repeat and do not know how to stop. EFT gets to the root of that, and most couples start feeling a real difference sooner than they expect. For anxiety, I use exposure-focused CBT. It is less about changing your thoughts and more about helping you build a genuine comfort with uncertainty so anxiety stops making your decisions for you. For teens, we go at their pace entirely. I want it to feel like a space they actually want to come back to, and any family involvement is shaped around what genuinely helps the teenager, not what feels convenient for everyone else. Sessions are 50 minutes and most people start weekly, then we figure out together what makes sense from there. I see clients in person at my Dublin, CA office and via telehealth anywhere in California. The consultation is completely free and there is zero pressure after that. Most people tell me they just wish they had reached out a little sooner.
