Getting to know Todd Deutsch

Todd Deutsch, LMFT, is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in West Los Angeles with more than 20 years of experience. He specializes in men’s therapy and men’s issues, while also working with women, teens, and couples. He provides individual psychotherapy, couples counseling, marriage counseling, and support for men navigating personal, professional, and relationship challenges. Sessions are available in person at his West Los Angeles office and online throughout California. Todd earned his Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology with an emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy from Pepperdine University. His clinical work is informed by psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral strategies, attachment-based work, mindfulness, narrative therapy, emotional regulation, and practical problem solving. A significant part of Todd’s practice focuses on helping men who may appear confident and successful on the outside while privately struggling with anxiety, anger, depression, relationship conflict, emotional disconnection, career pressure, low confidence, dating concerns, attachment patterns, breakups, divorce, fatherhood, motivation, identity, or major life transitions. Todd is also the author of Grounded Openness: Attachment, Confidence, and the Making of a Grounded Man, which explores attachment, emotional regulation, vulnerability, confidence, dating, and relationships. He also leads a weekly men’s support group in West Los Angeles focused on connection, accountability, communication, emotional growth, and personal development. His approach is warm, direct, collaborative, and practical. Todd helps clients understand the patterns beneath their struggles while developing healthier ways to manage emotions, communicate clearly, strengthen relationships, make difficult decisions, and move forward with greater confidence and direction. What should a new client know about working with you?

Reaching out for therapy can feel uncomfortable, especially if you are used to handling problems on your own. You do not need to come into your first session with the right words, a diagnosis, or a perfectly defined goal. You can simply start with what has been happening and what no longer feels like it is working. My style is warm, down to earth, direct, and engaged. I am not someone who will simply sit back and nod. I listen carefully, ask meaningful questions, offer honest feedback, and help you better understand the patterns behind what you are experiencing. I also believe therapy should provide practical tools and ideas that can make a difference outside the therapy room. Many of the men I work with are managing significant responsibilities while privately dealing with anxiety, anger, relationship stress, dating and attachment concerns, career pressure, perfectionism, low confidence, emotional disconnection, or uncertainty about what comes next. Some are trying to become better partners or fathers. Others are successful professionally but feel stuck personally or disconnected from themselves. I also work with women, teens, and couples facing anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, communication problems, relationship challenges, trust issues, life transitions, and emotional stress. My goal is to create a space where you can be honest without feeling judged, while also doing meaningful work toward change. Therapy with me is collaborative. We will look at both what is happening now and the experiences or patterns that may be contributing to it. I see clients in person in West Los Angeles and online throughout California. You can learn more about my approach, weekly men’s group, and book Grounded Openness at CompleteGamePlan.com.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first few sessions are about getting a clear picture of what is happening in your life now, what brought you to therapy, what you have already tried, and what you would like to be different. I also want to understand the relationships, experiences, family dynamics, and patterns that may be shaping how you respond to stress, conflict, intimacy, uncertainty, and important decisions. Together, we identify the areas that need attention and create a clear direction for the work. Some clients come in with one specific concern, while others are trying to understand several things happening at once. The process is adjusted to the individual rather than following a rigid formula. From there, therapy combines insight with practical change. We may work on understanding recurring relationship patterns, reducing anxiety and overthinking, managing anger, improving emotional regulation, strengthening confidence, setting healthier boundaries, communicating more directly, or becoming more emotionally present with the people who matter to you. For couples, we often focus on identifying the cycle beneath recurring conflict rather than simply arguing about the latest disagreement. We may work on improving communication, understanding attachment patterns, rebuilding trust, strengthening intimacy, and learning how to stay connected during difficult conversations. Depending on your needs, I may integrate psychodynamic therapy, cognitive behavioral strategies, attachment-based work, mindfulness, narrative therapy, emotional regulation, and practical problem solving. We will periodically review your progress and adjust the focus so therapy continues to address the changes that matter most to you. When appropriate, I may also suggest additional resources, including my book Grounded Openness or my weekly men’s support group in West Los Angeles.
