Have you spent so much time being strong for everyone else that you have forgotten what it feels like to have a safe place for you? Maybe you are the caregiver, spouse, parent, leader, pastor, professional, veteran, or person everyone depends on—yet beneath the surface, you are tired, hurting, and quietly running on empty. You may be carrying grief, trauma, anxiety, depression, relationship pain, or the weight of a difficult season while still showing up every day and doing what needs to be done. You do not have to carry it all alone. I’m Tonya Powell, MA, LPC. For more than 20 years, I have had the honor of walking alongside individuals, couples, and families through some of life’s most painful and uncertain seasons. My approach is faith-centered, trauma-informed, compassionate, and focused on the whole person. I do not see you as a diagnosis or a problem to be fixed. I see you—a person with a story, God-given strengths, and the capacity to heal, grow, and move forward. Our time together will provide room for you to exhale, feel heard without judgment, and begin restoring what life has depleted. Through compassionate, evidence-based counseling tailored to your needs—and faith integration when you desire it—we will work together to bring clarity to what you are experiencing, strengthen your ability to cope, heal emotional wounds, and help you take meaningful steps forward at a pace that honors your journey. Even the strong need a safe place to rest. It would be an honor to walk alongside you as you rest, be filled, arise, and move forward—one conversation and one connection at a time.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me means you do not have to perform, find the perfect words, or pretend that you are okay. You are welcome to come exactly as you are. My style is warm, genuine, compassionate, and conversational. I will listen closely, ask thoughtful questions, and make room for your full story without judgment. I will also be honest with you and, when helpful, gently challenge patterns that may be keeping you stuck. Therapy with me is collaborative. You are the expert on your life, and I bring more than 20 years of clinical experience, guidance, and practical tools. I use a whole-person, trauma-informed, and strength-based approach. Together, we will look beyond the symptoms to understand what has happened, what has been depleted, and what you need to begin healing. If faith is important to you, Christian principles, Scripture, or prayer may be incorporated at your request. Faith integration is always voluntary and guided by your comfort and preferences. You can expect a safe place to exhale, be heard, rediscover your strength, and take meaningful steps forward. We will move with compassion and intention—at a pace that honors your journey.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We will begin with a conversation about what brought you to counseling, what life has felt like lately, what you have already survived, the strengths and support you carry, and what you hope will change. I will explain confidentiality, answer your questions, and invite you to share only what you feel ready to share. Together, we will identify your needs and develop a counseling plan that feels meaningful, personal, and realistic. Ongoing sessions may include processing painful experiences, recognizing patterns and triggers, strengthening emotional regulation, improving communication and boundaries, and learning practical tools you can use outside of therapy. Depending on your needs, I may incorporate Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, psychoeducation, mindfulness, trauma-informed practices, and client-requested faith integration. We will regularly discuss what is helping, honor the progress you are making, and adjust our approach as your needs change. Some sessions may be tender and reflective, while others may be practical and action-focused. My hope is that you leave each conversation feeling heard, supported, and clearer about your next step.
