I’m Tonya Wesley, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker Associate born and raised in the Raleigh area. I earned my Master of Social Work from Simmons University in 2018, and I’m currently pursuing specialized training in Play Therapy toward becoming a Registered Play Therapist (RPT). Alongside my clinical work, I’ve spent the past ten years as a postpartum doula, supporting families through pregnancy, childbirth, and the transition into parenthood — experience that’s given me a deep appreciation for the strengths and challenges people carry through major life transitions. I work with children, adolescents, and adults, primarily using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) alongside other evidence-based approaches tailored to what you need. You don’t have to navigate life’s difficulties alone. My goal is to help you feel seen, understood, and supported as you build resilience and confidence in your own ability to overcome challenges.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy with me is a collaborative process — I want you to feel heard, supported, and empowered to create meaningful change, not directed or judged. Whatever brings you in, from anxiety and life transitions to family stress or emotional regulation, we’ll work at a pace that respects where you are. If you’re bringing in a child or teen, I focus first on building a trusting relationship so they feel comfortable being themselves, and I partner closely with caregivers to support communication and progress at home. For adults, expect a warm, nonjudgmental space to identify your strengths and work through what’s weighing on you. You don’t have to navigate this alone — healing begins when you feel seen and supported, and that’s exactly the space I aim to create.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Before your first session, our Client Care Coordinator, Heather, will reach out to complete paperwork and make sure I’m a good match for what you’re looking for — so we can focus on you from the beginning. For adults, the first few sessions are about getting to know you, understanding what brings you to therapy, and identifying what you’d like to change or work toward. From there, I tailor therapy to your individual needs and goals. You’re the expert on your own life, and I bring the clinical knowledge and tools. Together, we’ll decide what feels most helpful and adjust along the way. For teens, a parent joins for part of the first session before I begin meeting individually with the teen. For younger children, the first session is parents only, with both parents encouraged to attend. If parents are divorced, both must consent to treatment. After that, I meet with your child using developmentally appropriate approaches such as Child-Centered Play Therapy, art, and sand tray therapy. I also meet with parents every 4–6 weeks to discuss progress and ways to support goals at home. Regardless of age, therapy is collaborative, individualized, and designed to grow and change with you.
