Tracie Smith, LCSW-S

Psychotherapist
TX
I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than 20 years of experience working with adults across healthcare, behavioral health, and community settings. My practice focuses on adults in midlife and beyond who may be navigating emotional exhaustion, significant life changes, grief and prolonged loss, painful loneliness, family estrangement or no-contact relationships, caregiving demands, shifting roles, and difficult decisions about what comes next. Therapy with me is thoughtful, collaborative, and grounded in the realities of your life. I provide space to slow things down, make sense of what you are carrying, identify patterns that may no longer be serving you, and consider meaningful next steps without judgment, pressure, or assumptions. My clinical approach draws from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, and Narrative Therapy. I tailor our work to your individual needs rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach. I currently provide virtual therapy to clients located throughout Texas. If you are facing a transition you did not expect, struggling with a relationship or loss that does not have an easy resolution, or simply feeling worn down by the weight of life’s demands, therapy can provide a place to make room for yourself and determine what you need moving forward.

What should a new client know about working with you?

You decide what we work on. I'll tell you what I see and I'll be direct about it, but the goals are yours and so is the pace. If there's something you don't want to work on, we don't work on it. If you decide you've done what you came to do, we can end there — or change direction and take on something else. This work asks something of you, too — not answers, not a plan, just a willingness to look honestly at what's in front of you and stay in the conversation, even when it's uncomfortable. You don't have to arrive ready for all of it. Willingness is enough. The work is grounded in what's actually happening, not in what should have happened. Your values, your culture, and the way you do things are the starting point. I don't make your plans or decisions. I bring the clinical process. You bring the expertise on your own life. I draw from multiple therapeutic approaches based on your needs and goals — cognitive behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, interpersonal psychotherapy, solution-focused therapy, rational emotive behavior therapy, psychodynamic and narrative therapy, reminiscence therapy, and structured life review. These approaches can help us look at current concerns, recurring patterns, relationships, past experiences, practical decisions, personal meaning, grief and loss, and the ways your life has changed over time. When grief is part of it, the work is grief-informed.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first sessions focus on understanding what brings you to therapy, what has been happening in your life, and what you hope will be different. We will talk about your current concerns, relevant history, relationships, stressors, strengths, and the areas you would most like to work on. Together, we will identify goals and begin developing a direction for our work. Ongoing sessions are conversational, focused, and collaborative. We may explore recent experiences, recurring patterns, difficult emotions, relationships, decisions, or changes you are trying to navigate. I may ask questions, offer observations, introduce new ways of looking at a situation, or suggest strategies that fit what we are working on. As therapy progresses, we will regularly consider what is changing, what still feels difficult, and whether our goals or approach need to be adjusted. The process is individualized, and the pace of therapy is guided by your needs, circumstances, and progress.
