Psychotherapist
6601 Irongate Square, Richmond, VA
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with more than 20 years of experience in the behavioral health field, I believe therapy should provide a safe, supportive space where individuals can feel heard, understood, and empowered to make meaningful changes. My clinical experience includes working with individuals experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, grief and loss, life transitions, relationship challenges, stress, and substance use concerns. I utilize a trauma-informed, person-centered approach and incorporate evidence-based interventions such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills, Motivational Interviewing, and strengths-based approaches. I understand that reaching out for support can be difficult. My goal is to meet you where you are, help you better understand the experiences that have shaped you, and work collaboratively to develop practical strategies for healing, resilience, and personal growth. When desired by the client, I also welcome the integration of faith and spirituality into the therapeutic process. Whether you are navigating a difficult season, processing trauma or grief, working toward recovery, or simply seeking a healthier and more fulfilling life, you do not have to navigate the process alone. I look forward to supporting you as you work toward your goals.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to therapy is warm, supportive, and collaborative. I believe you should have a space where you can speak openly, feel heard without judgment, and work at a pace that feels comfortable for you. I will meet you where you are while also gently challenging you to recognize patterns, build healthier coping skills, and move toward meaningful change. I use a trauma-informed and strengths-based approach, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused CBT, DBT skills, Motivational Interviewing, and somatic healing techniques. I recognize that trauma can affect both the mind and body, so our work may include learning to recognize your body's responses to stress, developing grounding and nervous-system regulation skills, and creating a greater sense of emotional and physical safety. Our sessions may include processing difficult experiences, understanding how past experiences influence current thoughts and relationships, identifying triggers and patterns, strengthening emotional regulation, setting healthy boundaries, and developing practical coping strategies you can use outside of therapy. You can expect me to be engaged, genuine, and compassionate while also helping you move toward your goals. Therapy is a partnership, and we will regularly discuss your progress and what is or is not working for you. When desired, I am also comfortable incorporating faith and spirituality into the healing process. You do not have to have everything figured out before beginning therapy. We can start where you are and work together toward healing, resilience, and meaningful change.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Starting therapy can feel like a big step, and you do not have to arrive knowing exactly what to say or where to begin. My goal is to create a warm, welcoming space where you can show up as you are, feel heard without judgment, and know that your experiences matter. We will take the time to understand what you need and move at a pace that feels supportive and manageable for you. Our first few sessions focus on getting to know you, understanding what brings you to therapy, and identifying the goals that are most important to you. We will explore your current concerns, relevant life experiences, strengths, relationships, coping strategies, and the ways your emotional and physical responses may be connected to stress or trauma. A typical session begins with a check-in about how you have been feeling and anything significant that has happened since our last visit. From there, we may explore current challenges, identify patterns or triggers, process emotions, practice coping or grounding skills, or work toward a specific treatment goal. Depending on your needs, I may incorporate CBT, Trauma-Focused CBT, DBT skills, Motivational Interviewing, and somatic healing techniques. Trauma work is approached carefully and at a pace that supports emotional safety and stability. You will not be expected to immediately revisit painful experiences in detail for healing to begin. Sessions are collaborative and practical. My goal is for you to leave with greater insight as well as tools you can use in your everyday life. We will regularly review your progress, recognize your growth, and adjust our approach as your needs and goals evolve. If faith or spirituality is important to you, it can also be incorporated into our work at your request. Above all, therapy is your space. You bring your lived experience, and I bring clinical knowledge, support, and guidance. Together, we will work toward greater understanding, healing, resilience, and meaningful change.
