Tyania Pugh, LCMHCA

Tyania Pugh, LCMHCA

Psychotherapist
2003 Chapel Hill Rd, Durham, NC
My name is Tyania (ty-an-nuh) and I am a Black, queer, cisgender licensed therapist (LCMHCA) offering individual therapy in Durham, NC. I am passionate about working with those from historically disempowered/oppressed communities, including BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and people with disabilities. I operate with the understanding that our mental health cannot be disentangled from systems of white supremacy, ableism, capitalism, and the like; to that end, I am committed to serving as a source of healing, empowerment, and support. My style is open, collaborative, and person-centered, informed by psychodynamic, relational-cultural, strengths-based, and attachment-based therapy approaches.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to therapy is rooted in the idea that profound healing occurs in the context of relationships. Our very lives are dictated by the relationships that we do or don’t have, and a large part of how we discover ourselves is through reflection and feedback - being seen and understood by another. Being your authentic self can be challenging for a number of reasons, like if you have experienced abuse, bullying, trauma, or neglect. This is precisely why it’s important to me that the therapeutic space is a safe one. I strive to make the time that we spend together a place of refuge from pronounced othering, where you can be your true self (or have the space to figure out who your true self is).

What is your typical process for working with clients?

While you can expect to engage in some talk therapy as I get to know you, a "typical" session looks different from client to client. I like to structure sessions based on what your individual needs and goals are.
