I'm Vanessa Cushing, a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Sex Therapist specializing in sex therapy, couples counseling, and sexual trauma. I founded Cushing Counseling to create a practice where clients can talk openly about sex, intimacy, and relationships — without shame or judgment. I work with individuals and couples navigating a wide range of concerns, including low sexual desire, desire discrepancy, erectile dysfunction, orgasm difficulties, pain with sex, premature ejaculation, sex addiction, out-of-control sexual behaviors, and reclaiming sexuality after trauma. I also specialize in integrative couples and sex therapy for partners who want to strengthen their emotional and physical connection. My approach blends Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with a feminist, LGBTQ+-affirming lens. All sessions are available via secure telehealth across Virginia, and Florida. If you've been putting off getting support because you weren't sure how to bring it up — this is a judgment-free space, and I'd be glad to help.

Getting to know Vanessa Cushing

What should a new client know about working with you?

Working with me means you'll never have to worry about being judged for what you share. Sex and intimacy can be deeply vulnerable topics, and I've built my practice around creating a space where clients feel genuinely safe to talk openly — sometimes for the first time. I take a collaborative, client-centered approach, meaning we move at your pace and focus on what matters most to you. I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with a feminist orientation, which means we'll work on both the thoughts and patterns that may be getting in the way, while also exploring the broader emotional and relational context of your concerns. I'm LGBTQ+-affirming and welcome clients of all genders, orientations, relationship structures, and backgrounds. Whether you're coming in as an individual or as a couple, you can expect warmth, directness, and a therapist who takes your sexual health as seriously as any other dimension of your wellbeing. All sessions are conducted via secure telehealth, so you can access care from the privacy and comfort of your own space.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session is focused on getting to know you — your history, your goals, and what's brought you to therapy now. I'll ask questions to understand the full picture, and you're always welcome to share only what feels comfortable. There's no pressure to dive into everything at once. From there, we'll develop a personalized treatment plan together. Sessions typically involve a mix of open conversation, psychoeducation (learning about how the body, mind, and relationships intersect), and practical skill-building you can apply between appointments. For couples, sessions are structured to give both partners space to be heard, and I work to keep the dynamic balanced and productive — not adversarial. Most clients come in weekly, especially at the start, and we adjust frequency as you make progress. Sex therapy is talk therapy — there is no physical component, and sessions take place entirely via telehealth video.
